US Strengthlifting Federation Nationals

#1

Post by PatrickDB » Sat Jan 13, 2018 6:26 pm

This is happening tomorrow, January 14. I figure it deserves a thread.

Links to video are here.

Women start about 7:30 AM PST, and the Open section is around 1 PM.

Questions: Will Chase hit three wheels on the press? How will Feigenbro do? Will we see any Press 3.0?

How do unlocked knees not contribute to upward bar movement? The answer won’t be revealed tomorrow!

Maybe one of these days, I will put up a nice squat/press/deadlift total, but it's not going to be tomorrow*. I will be there managing the platform in the afternoon session. I wish I could be there in the morning for the women's session, but alas, a few things prevent me from being there in the AM. We should see some crazy lifts and impressive numbers put up.

One of the things I like about the strengthlifting meets is the number of masters lifters I see. Not just 40-somethings either... each meet I've been too has had some 50s, 60s, perhaps even older competitors! That happens in powerlifting also, but it is nice to see.

Note the rules, recently revised in December (although I cannot tell where they were changed): http://usstrengthlifting.com/rules-competition/

*Or maybe ever because I am experimenting with sumo as my competition pull. I am also going to focus on getting my competition bench to 75 kg before I do any serious press training again.

I thought about doing one of these someday, if I can ever get my press back up into PR territory again.

They are fun, low stress meets! I would encourage anyone looking for a fun, low stress meet to do one of Tom C's meets.

It's lower stress at these, I think, simply because you don't know what others will weigh out at. so why bother to compare yourself to others during the meet? Some people will like that and some people will not.

I think I will be able to eye up my competition based on fluffiness. :-)

I did the fall meet in Washington, it was pretty cool. I was sick and didn't manage any PRs, but the meet was well-run and I had fun. The awards were all based on Wilks -no weight class awards- which was a bit different. Is that how nationals is done, too?

I know, right? You're about that weight aren't you, I'm a little less. It's freakish.

Chase just squatted 606lbs. Geeze.

I'm enjoying watching this though. Got it in the corner of my screen while I sit here pretending to work :)

Live update: Jordan squats 265 kg, the same as he did in the Fall Classic. Chase failed his third attempt (not sure of the weight) and the 606 will stand, which is about 20 lbs less than the fall.

Hmm...more proof that you don’t need to worry your pretty little head with complicated things like percentages or RPEs when programming. Just add 5 lbs!

Jordan with two reds on his opener of 275...

ETA: second attempt, I guess. He Instagramed that he would open with 275. Must not be feeling well today.

Chase with a snappy 304 second press attempt. Jordan hits 275 on his third, again tying his Fall attempt. People getting red lighted all over the place.

Chase fails 316 and loudly swears as he steps off stage.

My wife walked into my office about 5 seconds before Chase's 3rd attempt, and despite having never touched a barbell in her life and without any interest in doing so, said "OMG, why the hell did he lean back like that? Doesn't that change it from a shoulder press to a bench press, and his poor lower back!!!"

There are a lot of misses going on.

If I were paying $200 a month for coaching and going 6/9 or less, I’d be pissed.

I'm putting Jordan and Cordova's numbers here, since it looks like they're dueling for first. Chase is lifting about the same as he did in the Fall and can't catch them on the deadlift.

Jordan: 265/125/?

Cordova: (less than 300, missed 2nd and 3rd attempts, can't find the first)/110/?

Chase: 275/140/?

Based on this it looks like Jordan wins unless he screws up the deadlift.
