@JimRiley, haha yeah I need 23 minutes between sets and weeks to recover.

@DCR, it’s a lot of things. Main one is that ‘suboptimal’ loading/intensity doesn’t drive strength. Another is the idea that deadlifts are too much to recover from. It’s the deadlift and squat thing on the same day with too much loading that is too much fatigue for most. Finally, all of the mechanical assertions and optimization model is just trash.

Wow. Bench wasn’t completely disheartening today!

Good session. Volume is tolerable. Current trajectory is positive.

Being smarter about this shoulder. Both my right hip and shoulder have a labral tear. I’ve done well working around the hip one and I’m starting to round a corner with the shoulder. I had a somewhat “heavy” session on Wednesday with bench, so today was a focus on technique with volume. Keeping rep counts low helps with mental focus. Shortening time between sets makes up for the low rep counts.

Threw in some shoulder pressing work since range of motion is allowing it. I don’t know if I’ll ever press what I used to, but it’s a great exercise to do light and get some volume in.

Daughter is home from college and she did club rugby in the fall and spring of her freshman year. She’s gonna go back to it so we are gonna get her stronger for her sophomore year.

My top set was 440x3@8-ish (grip was running out) so I’m feeling good about 500 being in the pocket soon. Shoulder is in good order this week.

The pollen is bullshit right now.

While 155x5x5 is no big deal for most around these parts, it’s encouraging that it was done pain free, nos loss of technique and an increase of bar speed across sets. In the ‘slide deck’ here, the sets are presented in order. Once I’m comfy at 185x5x5 for an easy day, I’ll feel like things are really getting into order.

Excellent. Rugby is fun when you are strong. It's probably even more fun when you are fast, but I wouldn't know.

Last time I could approximate fast was in the early 1990s.

360x5x5 was nice.

Haven’t done squats in a while. Happy to hit some reps at 225 in crocs for hip mobility.

Daughter did some SSB and DL (regular barbell) work. Good form and technique. Will be adding a little weight soon to get lifts and getting some good progress.
