Warning: long, possibly boring programming post approaching. Not like, "programming", but programming. Specifically Python.

I've been meaning to make a program to convert my lifts for a while. I lift in all kg now, but want to continue logging in lb. I do love the little converter that pops up when you highlight numbers here (that was @unruhschuh, right?), but I don't feel like doing that for every set, especially when I'm doing ascending weights, and have to do it five times for one lift.

Well, I've finally gotten around to that. It's not totally finished (e.g., doesn't handle belted vs beltless yet), but it's enough to save me some time. As importantly, it lets me write in Notion in more normal, non-table-formatted form, like this (the extra spaces are insert by Notion, another annoyance this saves me from):
Monday, 6 December

Session RPE - 8.5

Session Time - 3:05

Broad Jump

3*8 - 30', 32', 32', 32', 30', 32', 32.5', 31'

Power Snatch

90*2@8

92*2@8

94*2*2@10, 8

96*2@10

LB Squat

210*1@9.5, wow

170*5@7

155*5*2@6, 5

T&G Bench

105*8*4@8-8.5

Curl-Grip Barbell Row

20*5@5

30*5*1@7, 8, 9.5
and converts it to this:

Code: Select all

Monday, 6 December

Session RPE/Time8.5/3:05

ExerciseWeight*Reps*Sets@RPE

Broad Jump
7*8 - 30', 32', 32', 32', 30', 32', 32.5', 31'
Power Snatch
198*2@8
203*2@8
207*2*2@10, 8
212*2@10
LB Squat
463*1@9.5, wow
375*5@7
342*5*2@6, 5
T&G Bench
231*8*4@8-8.5
Curl-Grip Barbell Row
44*5@5
66*5*1@7, 8, 9.5

Which then shows up as this:
Monday, 6 December

Session RPE/Time8.5/3:05
ExerciseWeight*Reps*Sets@RPE
Broad Jump 7*8 - 30', 32', 32', 32', 30', 32', 32.5', 31'
Power Snatch 198*2@8
203*2@8
207*2*2@10, 8
212*2@10
LB Squat 463*1@9.5, wow
375*5@7
342*5*2@6, 5
T&G Bench 231*8*4@8-8.5
Curl-Grip Barbell Row 44*5@5
66*5*1@7, 8, 9.5
Another issue is that I don't currently have it set to be specific about what it converts, hence why "3" in broad jumps gets turned into "7".
I'm currently looking at the first character of each line and checking if it's numeric (if char.isnumeric():), and I feel like I should be able to add ( and int(char) > 10) to ignore any numbers under 10, but that's giving me a weird error later. I'll figure it out as I move forward. This is about as much for getting back into programming as it is for my own logging convenience.

Anyway, that's what I've been doing non-lifting wise.

Pretty good first week of the block, especially Monday. Thursday had to be cut short, but oh well, the rest of the day was productive.

Monday, 20 December

Session RPE/Time5/1:21
ExerciseWeight*Reps*Sets@RPE
Broad Jump 3*8 - 29’-31’
Power Snatch 154*2
154*1 (muscle snatch)
220*1
w/T&G Bench 154*8
220*8

That was it. Took three and a half hours from the time I took my pre-workout caffeine and I managed 5 sets of lifting done, only two of which were with close to working weight. I regret nothing. I started by getting a few things around the house done real quick, and ended up barely doing a workout but getting a ton of other stuff done. Worth it.

I've decided to log my warmups now, at least for a while. Not because I'm under the slightest illusion that anybody cares about them, but because it's an easier way for me to check over time.

That's one thing I'm working on this year, actually. I need better systems for tracking my lifting data, e.g., a better way to check what the best squat I've done for a set of five is, or what my e1RM was 6 months ago and what was my training like leading to that point. I have most of the data between my logs and my GymAware, but not in a good way to see trends or anything. Which half-defeats the purpose of a $2000 bar tracker to start with.

Which, by the way, is by far the most over-the-top gym purchase I've made. Some people have an amazing $3000 leg press. I have a $2000 little cube and string. But considering I'm doing 8s at the moment and it's been doing the counting for me... maybe worth it.

As I'm doing it, or what? Notion, for that.

I don't keep many specific notes beyond what I post here and on IG. I have lots of videos though, many of which still need sorting... And there's the GymAware records. I use that for most barbell lifts other than WL movements. I keep track of my daily bodyweight in an Excel sheet.

Sunday, 9 January

Session RPE/Time8/1:48
ExerciseWeight*Reps*Sets@RPE
Box Jump 30"*5
40"*3*5
Squat 154*8
276*8*2@5.5
w/Overhead Press 44*8
110*5
154*2
176*1@6?
187*1@10

Deadlift 154*10
265*5
375*2
485*1@6.5
529*1@7.5

Decent session. Deadlift being that heavy was a bit disappointing, but we'll see how it goes. It responds to weird things, sometimes. Had to work through some soreness, but meh. Nothing actually painful.

Press was @10 because I immediately kicked the bar out in front, and it stalled until I could get it back in position.

I figured you'd had some kind of system for planning training and tracking. I guess just writing it into a note taking app makes sense, but for some reason I moved to dedicated apps after abandoning paper notebooks in an effort to streamline the process of planning workouts, tracking, etc. Turns out, I spend a shit load of time getting this to work since I decided there wasn't anything out there I liked enough and created my own... Now not sure I can go to just text.

Trying to get there, without making it more hassle than it's worth. But I do need a better way to see trends and whatnot.

I'm back! I mean, I didn't go anywhere, and I have actually been training. But I'm back to logging.

Trying to get Instagram to cooperate with me, but that's a no go (except apparently to complain about said lack of cooperation, ironically).

No idea what makes the difference about what will upload. I may have to do some experimenting with a throwaway account.

Thursday, 19 May

Session RPE/Time7/2:38
ExerciseWeight*Reps*Sets@RPE
Bike 5 min - 1.65 min
Broad Jumps Easy
Squat 353*5*3@6.5
Bench 265*5*5@7-8.5
Power Snatch 154*2
165*2
176*2*3@8
Plank 60 sec * 2

This block is going well. I'm not yet hitting any weights that are impressive compared to what I 've lifted in the past*, but I'm going up in bar weight over time without consistently going up on RPE, finally.

*To be fair, I shouldn't really compare lifts I did at ~255 lb bodyweight to my current lifts at ~215.
