Kombucha - not just for dirty hippies

What's a carb? A car part? What's a macro? A type of camera lens?

Kombucha - not just for dirty hippies

I have been looking for a soft drink replacement for some time. I read an article that mealworms that ingested the probiotics from kombucha cultures experienced similar effects as if fasting. Even when they were consuming a normal calorie diet. Of course mealworms not people. But I said fuck it and tried the store bought stuff. If you are a fan of carbonated drinks with a sweet/tangy taste, I'd recommend kombucha. Has replaced soft drinks (diet coke) in my daily intake. You'll probably have to go to Whole Foods for a good selection.

I brewed my own for a while, but I didn't believe in any of the hippy health claims.

I had a job where I'd get called in from home at a moment's notice during the evening and I wanted a replacement for having an alcoholic drink at night. I didn't really care about getting buzzed, I more so enjoyed the intentionality of sitting and drinking something you didn't want to guzzle down.

I'd brew my kombucha very dry to where it was practically carbonated vinegar and I loved it. Talking about it makes me want to get back into it.

The kombucha I drink is 60-70 calories per 16 onces. The Kvass I saw was 180 to 200 calories. Do you know of a lower calorie option?

I think it depends on the kvass. I believe that typical kvass (like this https://www.carlsberggroup.com/products ... ras-bilyy/) is 25 kcal/100ml so 120 kcal/16 ounces if i'm not mistaken. 200 kcal/16 ounces would be a very sweet kvass. Another option (to have fine control over the amount of calories in the beverage) would be to make your own (very easy and cheap), either from black bread or apples.

Got a SCOBY and some starter tea from a coworker and started a batch last night.

The coworker actually got her seed culture from me 8 years ago and never stopped brewing, so that's kind of cool.

What goes around comes around. I brewed maybe 2 batches like 7 years ago, it was great but I got lazy.
