Looking into 4K monitors for gaming: apparently it is either buy a monitor that is 4K but can't do full HDR and has other compromises or just buy an OLED TV that will suck for normal computer applications.

I was using a 48" LG OLED for the past couple years, and thought it was, for the most part, great. What about it do you think will suck?

I've got my thunderbolt dock hidden under the desk, with the cable coming up through a grommet USB hub/cable passthrough. It's sweet, neat, uncluttered simplicity. Lucky for me, my wife has her own desk setup.JonA wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 7:34 amYep, you are right about the Monoprice panel. And 100% agree about the coding, slacking and memes.Root wrote: ↑Tue Feb 15, 2022 8:01 pm
Someone earlier in this thread mentioned buying a Monoprice with the same panel, and I believe that the Monoprice one is the same panel as the CRG9, not the G9s.
And yeah, I think the 1000R screens are geared towards gaming. People seem to sit pretty close to the screen so the sides are in their peripheral. Cool for shooting and driving, not so much for code and slack and memes.
My only regret has been to get a nice thunderbolt dock station for my setup. Now my wife can plug her laptop in and easily steal make use of the whole setup. She's even developing a taste for mechanical keyboards.
The mechanical keyboard is one piece of workstation nerdery I haven't ever tried. And from what I'm told, it's best to adopt a "not even once" policy, lest I pick up yet another expensive hobby.

Productivity tasks which will account for less than 10% of what it will do. But 4K at 120 hz with true HDR, < 1ms response time at a $1,200 price point doesn't really exist in the monitor space.
The 48" LC OLED C1 is almost certainly the way I will go. Just trying to think how I will justify it to my GF...

Put it somewhere where you can also use it as a TV. That's what I did.aurelius wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 12:29 pmProductivity tasks which will account for less than 10% of what it will do. But WHY will it suck for productivity tasks?

You can pick up decent ones for less than $200 nowadays. Some even have fancy lights...worth it IMO.

They also have a bit less clicky lower profile mechanical ones like this:aurelius wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 4:08 pmYou can pick up decent ones for less than $200 nowadays. Some even have fancy lights...worth it IMO.

It's a bit of a middle ground between regular keyboards and full depth mechanical ones.

OMG.
Root! What?
Dude. Typing on a Topre Keyboard is one of the greatest tactile pleasures in life. You must try it. I will seriously mail you my keyboard to try out. But you should just buy one.
I like other mechanical switch types...but Topre is the best.
Also: I despise the phrase "mechanical keyboard" because what keyboard isn't mechanical keyboard (fuck you, maybe not capacitive touch)?...and I'm guessing most switches are run through a debouncing circuit....so digital.
Edit: Topre isn't good for gaming.

Re: Calling Mac/computer nerds
I have a g910. It's got good feedback and I use the extra buttons for shortcuts. But it doesn't have the very satisfying click of some other keyboards. I started on a keyboard with blue caps and that thing was like a machine gun lol. I think it's worth not annoying everyone in my building when I'm typing, but the clicks are really satisfying, can't deny it.

Hmm, this is interesting and surprisingly not insanely priced:

Would be nice if this was 38" but I am not sure if we'll see a QD-OLED of that size soon.
