Thanks. Us old guys can still get it done, I'm looking forward to more of your log. When's your next contest? I'm aiming for a Static Monsters, whichever year I can pull it off.

Wednesday 10/11/23

Squats
135 x 3
225 x 3
315 x 3
405 x 3
495 x 1
545 x 1
495 x 1

Good Mornings
365 x 5, 6

Called it there, the mid back was tapped and I was just squeezing it in before I fly out in the morning. This time tomorrow I will be in transit to Rome.
On a positive note, the 545 felt like a double until the sticking point on the way up. 50/50 I could have hit again. I would have doubled or tripled the last set with 495 but I did something stupid, I laid the 25's on the spotter arms of the rack with the little pegs in the center holes when I pulled them off the bar, so they were totally in my way squatting and I actually bumped one of them on the single. I didn't want to knock them off so I stopped at a single. Dumb.

Awesome, and great soundtrack too. You rocketed out of the hole; was actually surprised when it slowed near the top.

Have a fantastic time in Italy. Following your log, a good time seems well earned.

Back to old tricks, the sticking point I have always suffered from. The PLers always asked my I squatted deep, it's so I can take a harder run at the point where I get stuck, LOL.
I plan on testing the limits of tasteful eating and consumption of espresso. I might come back fat and wired but hopefully the quad tendons calm down.

I’ve been a few times and on two occasions, despite eating like a lunatic, I actually tightened up. Food there is just different. (The third time was a six week school related thing during which I drank a truly absurd amount of beer, and so I gained a ton of weight.)

I spent a couple of summers in Italy. Loved it. Especially the coffee with grappa in it.

You're welcome. Looks like we're both old enough to remember Youko Ahola or Badenhorst winning deadlift events with 380 kilos around 1998. I no longer compete, but I keep lifting.

I would say that I no longer compete, but I keep daydreaming about doing Static Monsters. I haven't done a comp since the early 2000's. I competed directly against Travis Ortmayer and Clint Darden among others as an amateur. I quit because of physical issues that had an undiagnosed cause until 2018 when I got surgery to fix things, so now I am actually better than ever in general just a little weaker. Age hurts the stamina a little, and I have never really been "All in" as it were as far as competing. Nobody is going to WSM as a natty anymore, and I have no interest in taking what I know would need to be taken to be at that level again at my age. But damn if it isn't still fun, and getting a Masters record would be cool. Anyway, I'm supposed to be on vacation so back to drinking espresso and eating all of the carbs in Lecce.

Travis Ortmayer was in Quebec in 2008 where he entered a competition called Fortissimo https://youtu.be/6VGcXqlleFo. There was a press medley where one of the implements was a pair of globe dumbbells of 150 lbs each. Big Z said he didn't want to risk injury with something so unfamiliar. Even back then, it was a rare natty who achieved this level.

I only started lifting seriously when I was nearly 41, because I was tired of back pain from sitting at a computer. I'm vastly stronger than in my younger years.

Sunday 10/29/23

Squats
225 x 3
315 x 3
405 x 3
475 x 2

Feeling it out after two weeks vacationing. Gotta figure out where I am at now. Anyway, All pretty easy reps, knees only complained a little, and I am firmly decided that I positively hate the Ohio bar that I have. It's the weird one with two rings on each side, and it sucks out loud. I got it used as part of a package of stuff off FB Marketplace at the beginning of the pandemic. The Pendlay bar that I also got in the deal is a lot better, but still not the best.
Also, I subjected myself to some sort of Metallica cover album on one of the flights. Over 50 tracks. It impressed upon me the difficulty in making a decent cover, apparently, as that was a supreme collection of suckitude. The Weezer cover was so-so if I'm generous and easily the best attempt. Just WOW. I don't think that I listened to a single track all of the way through, I just couldn't do it.

OHP - from the rack
135 x 5
185 x 3
205 x 2
205 x 3 x 2 sets

Nothing serious, these got easier as they went, felt like an easy 4 or 5 on the last set.

Thursday 11/2/23

Deadlifts - conventional, raw, testing after the layoff
245 x 3 - DOH
335 x 3
425 x 3
515 x 3 - straps
605 x 2
605 x 1 -belt
Trying to not lay it all out and crush my recovery right out of the gate. The top double felt easy peasy, I really can't say how many I really had but it was probably several more, which is a good feeling. The rep with the belt felt like I was going to crap my shorts, but it was a little easier off the floor honestly. Which is weird for me. I was wearing it just under the pecs, way more comfortable than around the waist. Side note, I seem to be ever so slightly thinner in the gut based on the belt but bigger in the chest versus last time I put it on. I am fat from vacation so I'll take it.

Just catching up on your log. You're really moving the weights! How serious about competing are you?

I am reasonably serious. It would be pretty easy to show up at one of these Static Monsters things I think, they are everywhere, and I feel like I am approaching serious enough weights. My problem is that I would really like to get a record if I show up. I am not likely to be anywhere near the number for Log Press, but if i work out the suit I might be within reach of the Axle DL number right now. That is a major motivation for me, as I never actually got any records when I was competing. The stuff I maybe could have done wasn't contested and the stuff that was contested wasn't stuff I was likely to get a record at. The DL for reps record was ridiculous, I had the reps at 500 lbs (That was what the record weas set at at the time in Amateur) but I did not have them within the 75 second time limit. 26 reps in 75 seconds is a lot, and I don't know how Jon Anderson did it that fast.

Sunday 11/5/23

Conventional DL - straps (New ones)
605 x 1
Thus concluded my warmup, not joking, I walked in and pulled it cold

Floor Press
245 x 5 x 4 sets

That's it, I was forcing my lazy procrastinating backside to do something before bed and work off the burrito and ice cream.

LOL. Laziness man. And being blessed with resilient tendons. My hamstrings complained, but not loudly, so I call it a win. The new straps are weird but nifty, they are the single loop stitched together at the end. So, more of a grip it and rip it which makes working with the suit easier I am hoping by minimizing setup time as I can't really get a real breath once I am touching the bar.
