Reminds me of Drawn and quartered in like a kind of a better version of Incantation or Immolation way.

The D&Q record you linked is really good - just served as my deadlift soundtrack. I'm a big fan of latter day Immolation and Incantation, who IMO really haven't fallen off nearly to the extent of some of their peers.

Their latest is fucking amazing as well. I don't know what it is about them, but they just do death metal better than anyone I've heard in the last decade or so.

I've listened through the latest twice now and dig the shit out of it. There's just so many more dynamics, in terms of riff/tempo/style shifts, than one usual gets in this style. Oddly, the review at Angry Metal Guy back in 2018 was really negative. That's generally my most trusted review site, although they had some significant turnover last year that was not for the better. In any event, they were totally fucking off on this one - it rules.

I find music reviews in general to be kind of worthless. Especially since I can listen to anything I want for free before buying it. If I remember correctly, angry metal guy gave pretty lukewarm reviews to WITTR Black Cascade, which is my favorite by them. Maybe I have bad metal taste

Great post. The Snorlax is nothing I haven’t heard before but I really enjoyed it. On the contrary, the Funereal Presence has its own sound entirely and I had tried over and over to get into it a few months back, with no success. Gave it another try here and...YES. It clicked.

Will get to the Bell Witch in a bit. One of the reviews of Achatius mentioned Mifits/Emberdawn as the only other worthy record from last year. Hyperbole but intriguing, so working through it now. Thus far - tasty.

Yeah, you're right about the snorlax, it's done perfect, though!

FP, I think you definitely have to be in the right headspace for it to click, luckily for me it did immediately the first time I heard it. So weird. Very similar to the their previous project Negative Plane.

Oh, this reminds me that I still need to sit down and give this album a full listen. I still have the CD still wrapped in plastic, even though I pre-ordered it and got it early.

Bell Witch's first three albums are some of my favorites from the last decade, and I'm amazed how much they are able to pull off as a two-piece. I didn't even realize there wasn't a guitar for a long time after listening to their first album back in 2012.

Same, which is how I feel about the last one too. Listened through that fucking thing 100 times trying to get into it, sort of grew to respect it, but could not enjoy it. I have a (very) long drive coming up later this month and am going to try the new one totally undistracted... I'm not hopeful.

I've just kind of discovered funeral doom, stumbling onto it from listening to Russian black metal. Anyone know of anything I should hear in that subgenre of a subgenre? Its kind of like someone took the slow parts of Blackwater Park and added doom metal.

Funeral doom is one of the most boring extreme metal genres overall for me, but when it hits the spot, it does so hard.
Thergothon for me is the peak of the genre. Second place for me would be Asunder, the first album, A Clarion Call in particular.

Mournful Congregation deserve a mention too, but don't reach the same heights as the aforementioned bands for my tastes

Another favorite is this track from the first Sacaramentary Abolishment album, they're not a funeral doom band at all, but Sacramentary Abolishment and the follow-up band Axis of Advance tend to include funeral doom sections in their music, and manage to do so convincingly despite the otherwise breakneck speed of their music. This track though is pure Thergothon worship from start to finish.

The Quebec scene is pretty much all good. It's like 2nd wave Norwegian with out some of the cheesiness.
