I came across this fella yesterday whilst watching Juji's first powerlifting meet.



I'm not a real powerlifting aficionado, does this constitute a world record? I get confused by all the rules and all the feds. Either way, I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone pull close to a 1000lbs that easily before.

I've followed him on Instagram for awhile. He pulled a little over 1000lbs with straps in the gym about six months ago. He makes 800's and 900's look like speed work though, it's pretty crazy.

I don't believe that this was in a sanctioned meet or federation. Stef Cohen was the center judge, who also competed in the meet, and I don't think any of the other judges were sanctioned by a major federation. I think this meet was more like the Record Breakers meet that has gone on the past couple of years.

Was it a good lift? Yes.

Was it impressive? For sure.

Was it a legit world record performed in a sanctioned meet with qualified judges? I would have to say no, so because of that then it isn't an "official" WR.

I saw they had some weird rule about taking a 4th attempt if it was for some kind of record, didn't know how kosher that was.

I also saw the 1015lb gym lift with straps but was dubious about the actual weight on the bar as it moved so easily.

He's a shockingly good deadlifter, he surely must have 1000lbs in him at some point.

That's a crazy smooth deadlift. The thing that drives me crazy (well, one of the things) is the 42 different powerlifitng feds and the different rules for each of them.



He's 25 and just coming into his prime hook grip wise. Getting an absolute ton of deflection out of the soft bar though, makes it so hard to compare to other deadlifts (other than he's massively strong and one of the best deadlifters competing). Freakishly strong, and from what I heard he's (no clue if this is true or not) just now getting into competing with hook grip.

It's pretty controversial, from my understanding it used to be standard (i.e. the IPF did it at one point), but now it's becoming more rare.

Oh ok, didn't know that. I think they are the ones who put on the Kern now but not sure.

Still suspect to me that you have regular lifters who are also competing in the meet doing the judging, you know? But like I said it was a very impressive lift, and I think it would have counted in any fed.

Looks like Belkin set his record of 970 at a WRPF meet.

So I spose this must be a new record and the biggest deadlift outside of SHW

hes got the biggest non-strongman DL ive seen. the only other two powerlifters i can think of that may have more are cailer woolam and yuri belkin. i follow jamal B on instagram, he is awesome.

do you think someone that strong is intimidated by anyone? like not only in sport but like out in public? if hes at a bar or something and a big biker dude or some gangster starts shit, would he feel threatened? i mean knowing inside that hes stronger than anyone around at all times.

Yes absolutely. You know the phenomenon of the big dog intimidated by a yapping little poodle? It happens with humans too.

There are a couple of cinematic depictions of heavyweight boxers getting ordered around and bullied by mobsters. It happens in Miller's Crossing but there's an even better example in an old black and white gangster movie I've seen but can't remember the title of.

More generally a lot of generals (before the time of professional militaries where you have to worry about courts martial) have been physically unimposing but manage to bend armies to their will. Napoleon would be an example I guess. Admittedly there are other ways than intimidation to command loyalty.

Toughness and strength are not the same thing. Some people really don't want to get hurt or hurt anyone or even get yelled at.

Knowing he’s a black dude and that being out in public means not knowing who is and isn’t armed, I’m guessing he’s still pretty low key about it.

Being strong is great, but it doesn’t make you invincible nor does it make you a good fighter. It can aid with those pursuits, but it makes no guarantees.

IIRC, the fourth attempt thing used to exist in Olympic Weightlifting back in the 1960's also.
I think how it worked, if you were the last man standing w/ the gold secure .... they allowed a 4th attempt for a record attempt.
