Enjoyed Anniversary Kake (vaper) in a Stanwell bent horn last night. It was a crisp 40 degrees, which seems to enhance the flavor of the tobacco.

Yeah I saw that, I saw a great looking Big Ben Pipo Pipe in red, but it was sold out.

That Stanwell deal is almost too good to pass up. Heck, as long as you're placing an order, just grab a cob as well.

I suggest learning on a cob. If you huff and puff too hard or too fast you'll burn a hole in the briar, unless it's an estate/used pipe with plenty of buildup around the bowl.

So named because you find them at estate sales. Old dude dies, family sells all his stuff, so you go through his house and buy pipes on the cheap making out like a bandit. In actuality, it's really just a nice way of saying "used" pipe. I know guys that prefer estate pipes because they already have a bit of carbon buildup, so you avoid the whole briar pipe break-in process. I've purchased several, and haven't been too thrilled. If the dude who smoked the pipe was in love with latakia, it leaves ghosting in the briar and you can never smoke a non-English blend in it again.

That’s pretty sharp. You like the conical bowl? I imagine it would be forgiving for packing but maybe end up with a lot of dottle?

Depends on the tobacco you smoke. I smoke Burley down to a fine ash. Virginias end up with some dottle.

I must add, I've never had a briar that cost less than $100 (except Stanwell) smoke as good as the Freehand. It's just that good

That is a nice looking pipe (if I indeed found the one you were talking about). I'm more into the full bent style myself. Don't know if you ever visit Egypt, but there's a thread in the food and drinks section called "Anyone smoke a pipe?" that has a bunch of good info in it. I went over that when I started. The only advice I wish I'd gotten when starting was to start with a medium to strong flavored tobacco (doesn't have to be an aromatic) simply because mild tobaccos are harder to get the flavour nuances out of.

Side note - If you purchase a virginia in a tin, I suggest buying 2 tins, and aging the second tin at least a year or two. VAs take on some interesting characteristics as they age. Mine have mellowed out and gotten a little sweeter.

You're welcome! I love pipe tobacco, but don't get to smoke much of it since I hate smoking when it's above 70 outside, which almost always in south Texas
