Independent squat stands

Bands, chains, wraps, straps, racks... are you sure this is training related?

Independent squat stands

#1

Post by EstebanBrazoFuerte » Sat Jun 22, 2019 6:07 am

Hey y’all,

I was wondering if anyone has any input on purchasing independent squat stands? I’m getting into weightlifting and they would be convenient for my garage since I could tuck them away when not in use.

Just in case I’m not saying it right.... by “independent” i mean the two separate pieces. Something like this:

Thanks!

@KOTJ has done a good bit of research here, iirc.

I've never used a pair that didn't try their utter best to murder me.

@iamsmu made the smart recommendation to me to investigate a folding squat rack not unlike Titan or Rogue's offerings in the domain when I asked the same of the forum about a year ago. You get nearly the same minimal footprint when it's stored away as the independent stands, but can have safeties, and generally a lot more stability than the independent stands. Also, pullup bar.

I have a pair of squat stands, I had my welder build them.

If you buy, pay attention to the base, it seems to me that base support tries to trip you at times.
So when I made mine, I intentionally narrowed them in that regard at the bottom.
But every one I've seen commercially for sale is like this to a degree.
.....just seems irritating....but there's no way around it really.
They are NOT going to make something for mass consumption that COULD be wobbly.
(tripods base? still the same problem really)

With the wall-folder unit, that tripping issue issue goes away.

Other option are those super minimal elieko (single) squat stand is nice.
A WL gym I visit had one of those. They do the job.
https://www.eleiko.com/en/p/eleiko-squa ... #gs.kkz806
That thing is super light at 55#; its super easy quick to move around....easier than moving two stands.
They can telescope inward/outward to a degree.....You can leave it to the precise width you want.
A pair of stands, you have to fiddle with a bit, and probably always and inch or two off from workout to workout.
...and their not as stable as one unit.

I'm pretty sure there are cheaper knock off versions of this unit, if you look around.
(DHS, etc) ... but if its not super light, its not worth it in my opinion.
That's sorta the beauty of the thing.

triangle base one's? same problem it seems.

rectangle? same thing, look how close her feet are
look how it tips right at the end of the video.

The other thing is, If you have super soft rubber landing strips on your oly-platform, the independent stands will be partially on the wood center and partially on the rubber. They could jiggle a bit. If your rubber is of the harder variety, and the exact same level of the wood center part...its not a problem. A single-stand-unit will bridge the whole thing, and kind of correct for this (might be hard on the stand's cross member though)

I'm wondering if jerk blocks are really the better solution here?

I think so, but cost, weight, portability (stowability?) are more of a problem. Maybe those tall metal boxes the Chinese use?
Definitely lighter and easier to move, I would guess cheaper than stackable wooden boxes.

If you want to move your "squat apparatus" around quickly and portably, then no.
Its like 5 boxes per side.

If your gym / garage is big enough to leave your jerk boxes set up that where you can walk out
of the stacks to do the squat: then yes.
But loading a bunch of plates onto jerk boxes kinda sucks.
Not an insurmountable task, but kind of a sucky inconvenience thing.

(those chinese stands? the wood-block part with the divot is actually tapered downhill a tiny bit to make loading easier)

Yeah I looked at those. This seems like something a dedicated DIYer could do. Eventually I want to get a more expansive home gym that has a more unique/old-timey feel to it than just an R-3 and rogue plates. No offense to anyone who has that setup.

a piece some outdoor playground equipment (circa 1980) cut off its foundations, bought indoors, and then wrapped with four rolls of athletic tape?

EDIT: I just noticed, there is another one in the background. This is a actually production thing ... lol

Chinese knock off of SS Rack. Probably works better.

Ironmind also makes these, weighing in at 65# and with the ability to adjust width. Price isn't awful but it's high compared to the REP, Titan, etc. Rogue clone stuff.

maybe 160 (352#)

she is only a 58 (or whatever the new class is)

Well in that case (ONLY 352#) then no wow is warranted.

redacted: kinda looks like the bar loses its shine (knurl is there) at her neck, its probably a 20 kg bar.
(women's offical bar doesn't have center knurl ... on a IWF bar)

also, 190 (with more jungle gym equipment):
