Who is on a cut?

What's a carb? A car part? What's a macro? A type of camera lens?

Right now I'm at about 46% of Alone-Efficiency (1 pound per day seems pretty much average weight loss on the show for contenders).
Damn that’s incredible for 5 weeks!

What is “Alone-Efficiency” - is that the show you’re referring to? If not, what’s the show?

Thanks!

Yeah, it's the show. I've watched every regular season episode, and 1 pound per day is pretty consistent for them. Unless someone shoots a big animal it doesn't seem to matter what they do/eat, they burn about 1 pound per day, everyday, until they're super lean and crashing energy wise (usually pulled pretty fast at this point).

The interesting thing (to me) is how much the survival situation burn is so consistent, even if they are eating fruits/berries/big fish. Metabolism cranks up and they DO more, but don't seem to lose less weight. Of course (and this is way out of the remit here), still more food = better b/c you have a better shelter and are less likely to be sitting around thinking yourself into tapping out.

@5hout That math on the Alone contestants is pretty interesting.

I think the constrained expenditure model is well demonstrated within reasonable parameters. But some of that must go out the window in extreme situations.

I was surprised by the people on Alone that secured big game but continued losing weight. They've commented that protein alone wasn't enough for weight maintenance- we need fats or carbs. I know there are essential fatty acids that need to be obtained, but from a strictly energy balance standpoint, I never knew protein alone would fall short.

On phone atm, so cliff notes on this (subject to disclaimers):
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein_poisoning

My understanding is that so long as you're above some bf%(guess: 4%) and have acess to water and electrolytes, this probably not a concern.

But... Alone is of course not those conditions.

Rule of thumb I recall, but don't recall the source is you have to earn your protein with something like 100 cals fat to eat 500 cals protein (5:1) in lean times. This works out to like 1 large trout for 4 or 5 scrawny rabbits. But also, most alone people arent getting that per week (let alone per day, which is what maint would require).

I hope someone has access to all the alone data and is doing science on it. You've got near total info on food intake and activity, for near survival conditions.

ETA: We've also yet to see 2 comparable animals. Moose, musk ox, deer. But moose guy lost most of the fat, whitetail guy was in a much easier environment, and apparentl musk ox is a super lean meat (for the arctic or reg area) and they use the super warm hair to survive. So I'm hoping we can see a large animal kill that's similar to one of the above for comparison.

I have nothing to add other than my wife and I really like that show. It’s super entertaining and educational.

@5hout That's really fast weight loss. Just out of curiosity, is there a particular reason why you're losing weight so rapidly ?

During the holidays (i.e. from the end of rifle season to Dec 31) I engaged in a hedonist excess the likes of which hasn't been seen since the fall of Rome (or having a 17 year old's metabolism). Literally all I did was go to 2-3 square meals a day of reasonable size with no snacking, start doing reasonable amounts of cardio (not for weight loss), continue use of my standing desk I had re-started in Dec and cut drinking from a "holiday" amount to "I have had 1 bottle of chardonnay and maybe 5 other drinks since Jan 1).

I don't know how long this will work for something like 1.5% BW per week weight loss, I suspect not more than a few weeks longer..., but I'm happy to ride it while it works. I know some day I'll have to switch to counting calories and weighing things, but not today.

By the way, since this thread is asking “who is on a cut?”, I am. As of tomorrow, I’m 12 weeks out from my first bodybuilding competition. I’m down from 200 lbs at the beginning of the year to 188 +/- a pound every day this week. I think I need to lose another 15 pounds to be stage ready.

I’m keeping a training and progress log on here, but if any of my diet hacks can be helpful then I’m glad to share them.

Weigh ins tomorrow
Normally i would screen grab some of the best shots, but this is unfiltered.
Some flexed, some relaxed, old man skin and all
Never gonna be this light again, so i figured i'd document it.
Quads are roadmaps at this point.
But nobody needs to see that.

He is competing right now. I'll answer for him. DOTS. At his meet, the masters are competing based on DOTS.

Well, I am not as cut as Wilhelm, but I am somehow under 265 lbs and bouncing against 261 some days. I look noticeably different than I have ever looked in my life. I saw myself in the mirror yesterday getting out of the shower and was startled. I easily have the biggest upper body of my life, at least visually and the waist is shrinking instead of just the scale changing. The main things different are 1, I am doing physical labour at least 2 days a week on a project right now (And I don't mean light work, forming and cutting concrete for long hours) and I started eating yogurt with protein powder for a meal every day. Sometimes it's one of three, sometimes it's one of four. I mix in some honey sometimes as well. I am also eating less strictly in general as if that makes any sense. If I get abs I'm gonna look freaky, which ain't right at my age.
The yogurt idea came from a Hooper video, which comes from Stan Efferding really. He has his guys make smoothies mixing yogurt and orange juice mostly to eat the yogurt. Damned if it doesn't seem to do something outside of CICO.

Your stats are almost spot on to where I was when I kicked off my journey. Hitting those protein goals made a big difference in keeping muscle while shredding.

Not showing how they looked across the top or the femoral artery (still frightening, just didn't get it in this shot) like when i was leaner
177lbs am weight now vs 161 meet day
Also, a lot of the road map was, well, farther north...

Cutting. My umbilicus is over 36" while my weight is under 190. No good.

@Wilhelm, I remember reading somewhere here that you doing a "gut cut" prior to a competition. Do you mind sharing what that entails? Thanks.
