Proper cold-brew coffee works much better for this, IMO.
I've devolved to instant coffee for this, and not even good stuff, just the cheapest instant coffee at Costco. It is purely for the caffeine, though, but a bit of coffee-ish flavor is nice too.
Also, I don't like the idea of just chilling hot-brewed coffee? But if I did, aeropress would probably be a good way to do it, sans an espresso machine.

I want to try this method with both the kalita and aeropress. I've got like 700 aeropress filters so I'd rather use that if I can...

Aeropress is good for making iced coffee.

Just make a strong shot, and pour over ice while it’s still hot.

I prefer hot coffee anytime though.

I drink hot coffee in the morning followed by a shake containing chocolate whey and cold brew. Myprotein chocolate smooth + cold brew is great. Other chocolate whey hasn't worked as well.

I've wanted an espresso maker for a long time, but never had the space for it. Starting to do some research now, and it seems like Breville (maybe BES870XL) and Gaggia (maybe the Classic) are two good entry-level brands. Anyone have experience with either/both?

That thing is expensive. And it has over 2000 reviews. People must love their espresso. . . . Is it a good idea to have a grinder built into the device? It seems like it's doing too much for a single machine. I tend to like things that do one thing well. . . . But maybe grinding it pretty simple and it does it just right for espresso. I dunno. Is this a common feature?

The Bambino is nice and simple and takes up less space. It's not that much cheaper though.

Asked a friend who cares about coffee and has more money than me.

He used to have this, which looks better than the Breville for about the same price:

Now he's using this, which is much more expensive:

Sounds like it's still difficult to get a good result. He doesn't recommend the espresso hobby. . . .

Someone recommended the Rancilio Silvia to me, but then someone else recommended the Gaggia Classic at about half the price (new vs. new price).

I don't know if the Breville having a built-in grinder is a great idea. Maybe not. I have read that my Capresso grinder won't be good enough for espresso, though, so then I'll also need a new grinder.

You know I lift weights in my free time to be mediocre at something no one cares about, right? Espresso-making sounds like a great addition to my hobbies.

Either way, I wouldn't want a built in grinder. I have the capresso too. . . Wait and see. If it's not good enough then you can shop for the best grinder independently. You won't need to spend over 200 and you can use it for other styles of coffee.

I think if leaving out the built in grinder means you get a better maker for the money, go for it, since you need a grinder for other coffee anyways.

I have read that WWV doesn't provide accurate enough time for a wristwatch.

Fair enough. I’m leaning towards the Gaggia Classic Pro.

I ordered the Gaggia Classic Pro. I am excite.

I keep hearing that the grinder is more important than The espresso machine. I’ll try it with my $80 Capresso for now.

I was gonna ask about this. I was looking at that Breville Barista.

I also thought of just buying a nespresso machine in the mean time. I've had it and I enjoy it. Probably not as good as true expresso but I still enjoyed it

The Capresso wouldn't even grind fine enough for espresso. On the finer grind settings, it just spun around and struggled for a while. I cleaned it thoroughly and haven't really tried again since then.

Got the Baratza Sette 270. There are a lot of complaints about reliability, but I'm hoping that those were from earlier iterations and the new ones are better. Kinda taking a risk.

Maybe I should've gotten the Vario since it covers the coarser grinds better than the Sette for pourovers and stuff. Oh well.

The Gaggia Classic is fine, though their instructions are pretty shit. I can make decent espresso after playing around with it a little bit. I understand why you need a grinder with fine adjustments to get the extraction right. Lots more practice and youtube videos required to get better.

the only thing you'll potentially regret is that the grinder and machine are combined (if one breaks before the other). I love the breville machines, the quality of the coffee they produce is really good and they've a lot more stable than most of their italian competitors. They've also put a lot of thought into usability things, like the way spare parts stack, the way you refill, etc.

How crazy do you go about the beans? Like do you order and roast your own or just buy like star bucks or whatever brand expresso beans? I've done the self roasting thing, and its really fucking good but at the same time, I dont have the free time for that stuff.

There's a coffee shop near where I work who imports his own beans and also sells them. I just buy a kilo from him, usually lasts 4 weeks. They're Columbian and good. I don't think I could get a better taste by trying to roast my own, and similarly I don't have the time
