Re: Coffee
I saw a French press that fits in a nalgene on steep and cheap a while ago. Seems like it would make a big mess for a backpacking trip.
I’ll throw a Starbucks instant, a scoop of protein powder, and some of my gorp into the morning oatmeal.
I’ve been doing the ultralight ascetic thing for a bit, maybe it’s time to investigate some of these things.

Re: Coffee
The Starbucks instant stuff is decent. I made the mistake of getting a jar of the store brand instant coffee once...even a former Folgers rube like me found it undrinkable. Those little coffee bags are a good ultralight option too.

Re: Coffee
In looking for easy quick ways to add caffeine to my morning protein shake, I got a few boxes of Folgers cold brew coffee bags. It was better than I expected, but it made my fridge smell like my Grandpa's house, who had a pot of Folgers kept hot seemingly 24/7.

Re: Coffee
What would happen if you just put super-finely ground coffee beans in it? Is that stupid?Allentown wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2019 12:05 pmIn looking for easy quick ways to add caffeine to my morning protein shake, I got a few boxes of Folgers cold brew coffee bags. Re: Coffee
I haven’t figured out how to justify the price tag but I want one of these.

Yeah. Those have been on my fantasy-radar for a while. No way I can justify getting one...but that's what I really wantSpinyNorman wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2019 10:22 amI haven’t figured out how to justify the price tag but I want one of these.

Re: Coffee
@chromoly I just took the aeropress backpacking. It made great coffee, but I decided it was bulky, and requires a good fit to a hard mug to use. I’m going to try a collapsible cone from GSI or sea to summit or something next time. I was ridiculed for bringing the kitchen sink and I realized I can downsize my whole cooking system.

Re: Coffee
I just got an Aeropress and honestly I'm a little underwhelmed. Maybe I am just doing it wrong but I can't get it to make nearly as good of a cup as the Kalita. I've tried inverted style and regular, does anyone have a tutorial they like?

Re: Coffee
It’s not my favorite brew method, just something else to fuck around with. I use it at the office because I can nuke my water in my mug, grind my beans and set up the press while it’s heating up. I brought it on the trail because I didn’t think a slow pour from a pot would be practical. It brews a better cup than the alternative at work, the keurig.
The method on Stumptown’s site works pretty well. If you google the world aeropress championship they post the method of all the winners there.
I don’t get super fancy with it. I usually set it up inverted with as much room to brew as it’ll allow, add about 17g coffee. Pour in water that was boiling in the mug in the microwave till about 80% full. Stir it up good. Add the rest of the water. The mug still has some water so I rinse the filter and cap it. At about the 1min mark I pick it up, roll it for about 10 seconds and press. It’s hot AF (mug was boiling) so I add some cold water to dilute and make drinkable. It’s good enough.

Re: Coffee
I steep mine for closer to 5 minutes with a couple of stirs, and think it's the absolute best tasting cup of coffee.tdood wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2019 5:37 amIt’s not my favorite brew method, just something else to fuck around with. Re: Coffee
The aeropress is fine...but after trying about 20 different gadgets for brewing, I've settled on the Kalita. I don't think you're going to beat it.

Re: Coffee
Coffee: I just go by the dial on my Capresso grinder. Like 2.5 for one regular coffee mug, and 3.5 for my tall RTIC cup. I taste often as I add water at the end.
Grind size: on the small side of medium
Temp: I've tried 195 to 205. Lower is probably better when steeping small grounds for longer.

Re: Coffee
I guess I need to try steeping it for longer. I would just let it bloom a bit, top it off with water, stir and press.

Re: Coffee
For aeropress, I prefer inverted:
-pour in 17g of medium size ground coffee
-pour in some (maybe 1/3 of the way up) water at 205F, start a stopwatch
-wait til about 30 seconds and pour enough water to get close to the top of the tube
-add a little more water around 1:45, then put filter on, flip, and press by about 2:00-2:05
I don’t really know how much each little detail matters. I watched some YouTube videos and settled on this, and it’s pretty good.

Re: Coffee
This is about what I do. I don't love the aeropress as much as I thought I would, but I do try and use it at least once when I get a new batch of coffee.Manveer wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2019 10:30 pm For aeropress, I prefer inverted:

Re: Coffee
Has anyone used an aeropress for iced coffee? I wonder if it would work to just pour the concentrated coffee on ice. Add milk and choco protein powder and boom...mocha flavored protein drank.

Re: Coffee
I occasionally add coffee to protein shake if I'm not feeling like the sweetness of a straight shake.
