Mini chat
It has been a feature on a different forum (completely unrelated to lifting) that I used to visit quite often. They were also using phpBB software. The chat itself was located on the main page (only registered users could see it).
I think it would be a nice addition to have here.

Personally I don’t understand the value. OTOH if a lot of people want it, anyone who doesn’t can opt out in user preferences.

I'd opt out of it. Good content would get lost, and bad content would breed at an exponential rate.
