Login Redirects to Main Page Instead of Previous Page

This is actually the normal behaviour. There is a workaround though: If you intend to post (as described in your example), just click "Reply" or "New Topic", log in and post.

There is an extension that fixes that problem, but I'm hesitant to install something new, while we still have some glitches here and there (internal 500 error, e.g.).
