Wife and I got a MoviePass when they did that advertising blitz a few months ago. I've gone to quite a few movies and now she goes at least once a month. Movies are between $16-17 here in NYC, so $10 a month is easy to save money on. We'll see Star Wars next week.

Recently I've seen:

It - pretty terrible. No explanation for the creature or why it leaves them alone for an entire month for no reason. All jump scares, no substance. No child orgy, 0/10.

Blade Runner 2049 - All style, no substance. Super predictable. Very cool to look at, but nothing else.

American Made - Enjoyable Tom Cruise action movie. As long as you know what you were going in to see, you should enjoy it. Don't watch if you don't like basic Tom Cruise action movies.

Thor: Ragnorak - In the top tier of Marvel movies for sure. Funny while not being just a comedy. It's a super-hero movie, don't go in expecting Oscar material and you'll be happy.

Shape of Water - I started out not liking it because all of the characters are SUPER "archetype". But it pulled me in and the third act is a standout. Recommended.

I turned It off after the first scene. Why would they use up their monster in the first few minutes. He bursts out in full CGI thousand teeth krishna mouth and bites off the kid's arm. Geez. Build it up little.

There are good reasons why most horror movies follow a four stage model: (1) onset [some bad shit is going down], (2) discovery [the lead character discovers evidence of the monster], (3) confirmation [the existence of the monster is confirmed, typically by more than one person], (4) confrontation [the characters have to fight the monster]. . . .

You can draw these out or compress them. But to go strait to confrontation is dumb. Jeepers Creepers is brilliant in the onset and discovery stages. I love the first 30 minutes or so of that movie. The opening scene is so great. . . . Same goes with my favorite horror movie, Carpenter's The Thing. Talk about an amazing onset!

And there are good reasons to shield the monster from view a little. Most monsters, with a few exceptions, most notably Alien, are dumb looking. Hidden in the sewer Pennywise was scary, scary until he opened his stupid mouth. They should have just ended the scene and let the viewer find out that the kid never made it home. I'm not sure they should have even shown the monster at that point. Just have the kid walk up to the sewer drain and end the scene. I dunno. Either way, I stopped watching.

I don't go to movie theaters, so I will wait and then get the new star wars on blueray. Liked the force awakens, didn't care that much for rogue one.
So I liked 4, 5, 6 and 7.

I saw The Last Jedi yesterday and have mixed feelings about it. Some stuff that was pretty good but lots of bullshit IMO...

Lifting now, Last Jedi later. Home Depot trip in between. Shaping up to be a nice little Saturday!

Watched about three quarters of Chasing Amy and it's the second-worst movie I've seen so far. Especially disappointing because the other Kevin Smith movies I've seen were hilarious.

I mostly liked everything with Luke, Rey, and Kylo Ren. I like that they are not just following the formula of the first trilogy with Kylo turning on his puppet master and becoming "good" in the third movie. He might still turn but having him kill Snoke and remain on the dark side is at least something different.

Everything with Finn and Poe and Admiral Purple Hair was beyond stupid and pointless though. Why waste half the movie having two of your heroes continually fuck things up and accomplish nothing of consequence? Also it maked no sense whatsoever that Purple Hair would continually refuse to explain her plan to her subordinates even to the point of inciting a mutiny, just as some kind of power trip. And Rose crashing into Finn just when he was about to actually do something productive and save everyone, just to spout some cliched bullshit and give him a kiss, was also dumb.

Also Mary Poppins Leia wtf? Weird that they kept her character alive after Carrie Fisher died.

I also felt like a lot of the humor was misplaced and detracted from the impact of dramatic moments. Most egregious examples were after the barrage against Luke someone says "do you think you got him?" and then when the smoke clears he dusts off his shoulder... didn't work for me.

Ben Afflek's character starts dating this lesbian chick with the voice of a six-year-old who says she's never been with a guy before. Then surprise, surprise, it turns out she's not really lesbian, and she's been lying to him about her extensive heterosexual history. Then they have this big fight where she's bascially like, "You're not angry I lied, you're angry I've been with other guys!" and at that point I quit watching because there was nothing left to watch.

I have always loved Chasing Amy. Like, one of my all time favourite movies loved, and definitely one of Kevin Smith's best. That judgement might be coloured by the fact that it coincided with a time in my life where some of the themes might have been a little bit close to home, but I just thought it was a charming, quirky commentary on gender roles. I mean sure, it's cheesy, but it's Kevin Smith.

Worst movie I've ever seen by far is AI. Like, I can sit through almost everything, but that's the closest I've ever come to walking out of a cinema.

So - The Last Jedi. We went and saw it last night. I really liked it. It was what I expected, but also not.

I am hoping to go and see it again over the Christmas break with a couple of friends rather than the wife as I think there is probably a lot I missed, it was so action packed.

Infinity War. Hopefully that will be the last Avengers Movie. I'm only going to go see it to see if Stark actually kicks a bunch of ass with that Hulk Buster Suit. Why not use that all the time? at least more often.

Oh yeah, fucked up verison of Wrinkle in Time....relying on strictly visuals.....

The Dark Tower. Extremely don't bother. Idris Elba; wasted on bad material. Weirdly, Matthew McConaughey was alright, alright, alright as the bad guy, although they never managed to convey a motivation for his big badness, which sucks the whole life out of a quest to bring down the bad guy type movie. To do the premise justice would have required a lot of lore & mythos building for a movie format, so they kinda just didn't bother. As a result I never bought into the story even a little bit. Extremely flat dialogue with a couple of attempted stranger in a strange land jokes. Some really bad CGI.

Damn, I downloaded a copy of the Dark Tower the other day - really enjoyed the books and have a bit of a man crush on Idris Elba. Still might give it a go anyway.

Funny you say that about Oasis mbasic - I said the same thing when I saw then preview. It did look pretty cool visually though (and as wife said - it has cool music!)
