Re: Garage Gym or Basement Gym
My garage is in my basement, sooo.... both.
Was this worth necroing the thread for? I'm going with yes. But just in case:

I felt badass in the hot/cold garage for awhile, but now I just want my climate control in my basement.

Re: Garage Gym or Basement Gym
Lifting with an open garage door on nice days (and rainy days too...pretty much any time it's not freezing out) is a perk that trumps any and all cons of the garage.

Hmm, you are even more ruff n tuff than me. My phone says it will be 17F today. Was 17F on Sunday, which was not that fun, but not terrible either with enough layers.
Supposed to be 17F on Thursday also (my next workout of the week).
I need an insulated shed with temp controlled to 60F +/- 2F year round.

I finished my basement myself and insulated it well... it’s the warmest part of the house in the winter, and the coolest in the summer. #basementgymproblems
(Just temp gunned an interior wall at 74F)

Nicely done! It's 53 in my uninsulated, somebody-before-me-finished basement. That's acceptable, but not ideal. The better air sealed laundry area down there is much warmer. The sill plates probably aren't sealed behind the finished walls. I'm going to have to rip it all apart and redo it someday.
I't supposed to get to a freakish -12f on Saturday. I won't be using the garage this week. . . .

Garage is insulated. It's so cold though my plumber buddy is so busy fixing peoples furnaces he hasn't stopped by to setup the mini split. My space heater does ok if i give it hours to pre heatManveer wrote: ↑Tue Jan 02, 2018 12:43 pmHmm, you are even more ruff n tuff than me. My phone says it will be 17F today. How about "neither"? I went with "bedroom gym".

Noice!
My set up is in the Living room.
Really we call it the stove room (pellet stove), and weren't using it for much else but bookshelves.
It's a good thing too, because there really is nowhere else i could have made it work.
Wife is 100% fine with it.
Welcome to the site, btw. : )

Re: Garage Gym or Basement Gym
Grateful for the welcome! That said, one of my 2018 goals is "spend less time messing around on teh intermawebz", so we'll see how often I'm around.
Wife wants to lift as well, so she was more than OK with it. Which is good, because it's in the master bedroom (only room on the first floor where it really worked. Fortunately we live in the land of big'n'cheep housing).
Good thing you could do that indoors. I can't even imagine a "garage gym" in Northern Maine. Your hands would stick to the barbell this time of year.

Re: Garage Gym or Basement Gym
Personally, I'd base my decision about the basement on resale, not lifting (and whether you need it for other things). Does your wife workout at home/would she, and would she care which location the home gym was in?gtl wrote: ↑Mon Nov 06, 2017 6:55 pmI would say somewhat.. depends on the age of the house.
Pre 1980's had a lot of basements
Then I would say 90's to 2010's would be limited to mostly just custom homes (influx of track homes)
Then 2010+ likely any decent builder offers it as an option, but it's expensive
We wanted either a basement (preferably unfinished and we would finish it down the road if we needed extra space) or a 3 car garage. The cost new is about a $25k difference, so 3 car garage with extra square footage in the floorplan wins.

Re: Garage Gym or Basement Gym
An unfinished partial basement with 8ft ceilings starts at $25k -- all the way up to a full, finished basement with 9ft ceilings ends up being around $80k. They help in resale, but not $ for $.
We opted to go the garage route. She works out in the garage. The heater I have is pretty badass. For a poorly insulated and drafty garage, it was 10 degrees outside and running the heater on high got the garage up to 62 degrees in a hour.
We both use the gym, so we'll try to share the heat. For example, she worked out yesterday around 3, and was finishing when I got home from work -- which means I came home to a warm garage.
The new house will have a 3 car garage, be insulated, and shouldn't be as drafty. Ideally, I'd like to partition out the gym with a dividing wall to keep the gym side more climate controlled vs. where she'll park. I've compromised to parking outside (I have remote start anyways).
