Re: What’s on Netflix?!?
Currently watching The I Land.
It's so so bad that is actually ok. Some people wake up on an island without any memories of how they got there and try to look for food and water but before that they decide they will go swim and have fun a bit. Then sharks eats one. And then later a girl wants to go climbing.

Anybody following the HBO Watchmen series? Big fan of the original, and the first four episodes of this were sufficiently odd to grab my attention. It may suffer from character/storyline ADD though. Thoughts?

I'm enjoying it. I really like the Watchmen movie (never read the comic although I'm familiar with the differences) and The Leftovers is one of my all time favorite shows so when I heard Damon Lindelof was a the showrunner for this I was all in. I like it so far although I hope it all comes together in a satisfying way and they're not just throwing weird shit against the wall just for the sake of it.OrderInChaos wrote: ↑Sun Nov 17, 2019 10:46 am Anybody following the HBO Watchmen series? Lindelof's a big Alan Moore fan, because of that I have a little more hope that this won't happen... hard agree though.
The 'motion comic' of OG Watchmen is damn solid, cool soundtrack, a little awkward for all the female characters as there's only one narrator but it'd probably be more tolerable than a shitty qual pdf if you ever want to check out the OG, Moore work itself in a more palatable format.

LetterKenny is brilliant. I will fight you. Figure it out.brkriete wrote: ↑Wed Nov 13, 2019 7:30 amI agree. As someone who is not particularly steeped in Star Wars lore I enjoyed it and will keep watching.
Other stuff on the docket:
Watchmen - eh. Interested and will keep watching but don't think it's brilliant. Feels a little too try-hard.
Silicon Valley Season 6 - Good so far. Impressed they've managed to keep it funny and fresh with some cast turnover.
Derry Girls - my mom insisted it's hilarious so I watched a couple episodes with my fiancee. Thought it was annoying twice for every once it was funny. My fiancee thinks it's funny so she's been watching it when I'm not around.
Letterkenny - I think it's funny, my fiancee thinks it's annoying. Basically the opposite of Derry Girls.
Jack Ryan Season 2 - couldn't get into it at all for some reason although I liked the first season. Slept through most of it.
The Kominsky Method Season 2 - I've been enjoying it an episode at a time. Starting to relate to some of the characters experiences. Sign I'm getting old?

Re: What’s on Netflix?!?
Just finished Man in the High Castle. I liked it, but it feels unfinished. Every scene with the Smiths in it was great. Every scene without them or Juliana just made me want to fast forward and skip. I've read the book, and this was a pretty good adaptation - mostly staying true to the spirit, while adding in details, characters, etc to fill out 4 seasons.
SpoilerShow
Childan could be an interesting character at times, but his arc in this season was also kind of pointless. I liked Kido's descent to working for the Yakuza, but it still just felt rushed and extraneous. The BCR storyline was stupid. Why introduce another group now? Just felt like wasted storytelling, even though I did really like Bell.
I wish there was some redemption for Smith. I'd have been happy with another season where we see what happens when the American Reich supporters have to be confronted with the truth of the alt worlds, and see the nation go through the same struggle that Helen did. I'd also like to see the Reich get its comeuppance. It was very difficult to watch all the Nazi symbology, and I was really hoping to get some closure there.

All right, I get it. Episode 6 of Hill House gave me that "I can't look away" feeling I assume y'all mean with your must see TVs and such.

Re: What’s on Netflix?!?
Just saw an episode of Workaholics where the protagonist is given free alcohol and marijuana and then coerced into starring in a pornograohic film which causes him severe anxiety since he has micro-penis.
Meanwhile, the other male protagonist is convinced by a gender studies professor that his pornagraphy viewing habit is not a harmless hobby, but instead a harmful addiction that exploits women.
The show comes to a head when the former pornography enthusiast, along with the all-female gender studies class, goes to rescue his micro-penis friend from exploitation.
Finally, the third friend, fleeing military members he had repeatedly insulted and then actually been sexually assaulted by, stumbles on the scene and proposes an amicable solution for all.
The amicable solution takes the form of running a train.
I'm kind of bummed to know that I got hooked on this show so late and that there will be no new episodes.

I’m paying for 4 different streaming services (does Prime count?) right now. None of the 4 are carrying new R&M or are D+. I’m too stubborn to pay for more.
And I’m too afraid of big brother and not savvy enough to pirate... yet.

Re: What’s on Netflix?!?
After an epic battle with the giant pile of infant and newborn junk that has been piling up in my basement in a literal pile, I managed to secure the PS2 and get it upstairs so the kid could watch the Lion King movie. Wife took him to the play a week ago and it's all he's talked about since. Got PS2 upstairs, realized new TV doesn't have VGA inputs. Promptly bought D+ for my "wife" for Xmas.
So far, we've watched Lion King 4 times. Have yet to use it for anything else.
Will not be watching the newer, even worse version of A New Hope.

Watched The Irishman over two evenings. I really like mobster flicks though couldn't get into this. A geriatric De Niro trying to give that butcher bloke a kicking for being a dick to his daughter was pure cringe. I know Bob's been making bank for years using the same 4-5 facial expressions but getting tired now.

That scene was the worst scene I've ever witnessed in a De Niro flick. I kept watching it like "they're gonna end this scene now...they gotta...nope another "kick""GlasgowJock wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2019 10:08 am Watched The Irishman over two evenings. Yea same. Just a shame when you think back to some of the violent scenes in Casino or Goodfellas compared to that.LexAnderson wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2019 10:20 am That scene was the worst scene I've ever witnessed in a De Niro flick. I'll admit I chuckled during the kicking but I thought he was playing it as awkward/unsure of himself since this was very early on in his career as a violent mob enforcer/hitman. You might be right though, maybe he just can't move in a convincingly violent manner anymore. I definitely found watching him and Joe Pesci trying to play guys in their 30's or 40's during the flashbacks super distracting.
I still liked the film and I found all Hoffa stuff interesting. I grew up in the upper peninsula of Michigan and supposedly Jimmy Hoffa had a cabin on a lake out in the woods about 20 miles or so from my home (long before I was born obviously). I heard people tell stories about that, like there were armed guards that would chase you off if you tried to drive out there, or whatever, but I didn't even know who this supposedly famous guy was that they were talking about, just that he apparently was some kind of gangster and disappeared into thin air. So getting some insight into that was cool, even though Pacino's accent was all over the place.
I also thought it was interesting to get some perspective on what would happen to these gangster tough guys if they somehow happen to make it to old age without getting murdered; not often explored in crime movies. Still, definitely not Scorsese's best work (or anyone else involved).

Re: What’s on Netflix?!?
@TimK yeah, never have Pachino play a character that's based on a real person. The man just is not good at that stuff anymore. I honestly liked the story, it wasn't bad but it wasn't that great either. It was nice to get the old crew of guys back together for some fun, and closure to see them all share the same screen again. Harvey Kietel was looking pretty good for his age too.

Re: What’s on Netflix?!?
This surprised me too.
I refuse to have more than one (OK, two) TV series on the go at once, I'm just too limited in TV time plus I refuse to watch stuff that doesn't engage me. Until a few weeks ago (after finishing The Boys) I'd been kinda drifting by on YouTube, nek minnit there is all this new shit.
My 'in progress' currently is Silicon Valley and The Crown (joint effort with the wife.. gotta get that 'us time' somehow)...
After that the queue is looking like
Mr Robot
Rick and Morty
The Mandalorian (the wife reckons she'll subscribe to Disney+ in the new year.... thank god. Between Netflix, Foxtel and Google Play/Youtube Red I refuse to subscribe to another)
Sad to hear negative reviews of the Irishman, I was half interested in watching that.
