Leg Press vs. Hip Belt Squat Machine

Bands, chains, wraps, straps, racks... are you sure this is training related?

@Cody the old people have to be babysat. That’s how you make your money as a coach, by unloading and loading bars. Read between the lines.

@gtl that’s a good idea.

@michael I would tend to agree with Rip in that the full ROM needs to be worked. gtl’s simple solution allows this.

@OCG thanks for the info. When I was attempting to do hip belt squats without a machine, they felt weird and setting them up was goofy. I figured the machine fixed some of this. Maybe not.

This debate is from the idea that @SeanHerbison had about Hatfield squats allowing for a ton of muscle mass to be used. Wennig’s rig and his use is basically a Hatfield squat with a different loading point.

Thanks to all for hashing out a thought experiment.

I see your point, but it's not always valid. I've used the leg press for some heavier older folks. They may have enough strength to load a few 25/45 lb plates, yet not be able to do their own bodyweight on a squat while having to keep balance.

I believe that "a couple 45s" isn't what Gilly was originally referring to. More like CWS needs 12-16 45s per side on leg press, nowhere near that on belt squat.

For those who are interested, this might work.

also @TimK ...looking at you. (one arm and all).
I'd imagine leg presses suck, I (feel that I) have to hold onto the handles pretty hard.
I don't know if I could heavy leg press with one arm.

Would suck to set up and do at a globogym.
But at home, I see it as doable.

Yeah, I did sets of 10 yesterday and with just one arm I was sliding up the back pad a bit, asymmetrically. Probably would have been worse if I was going heavier.

I have a safety squat bar on the way now that should greatly improve my training ability.

Also from Sarah, someone who no longer back squat says and I quote “I feel quads so much more on belt squat, my legs get sore as fuck from belt squat. I don’t feel anything from leg press” she’s done 405x10@9 on leg press and just did 205x6x2@8 on belt squat fwiw.

I would also argue that the belt squat would have more carry over to a back squat than a leg press would.

You got videos of her doing both? I suspect a ROM difference.

Mike T is awesome, but he can get into the sea with those hip belt contraptions of his.

Edge Fitness took away every gym’s excuse for not having one with a price point under $1500.
