CTRL+B
CTRL+I
CTRL+U

Or even *bold*, ~italic~, _underline_

I agree with the first part, but I'm not sure what you mean by the second part. You mean having * before and after the part you want bold instead of , for example?

Yeah. I'd prefer keyboard shortcuts, but *make this bold* can work, too.

Am I missing something (probably), or are you not aware you can already bold, italics, and underline stuff?

Code: Select all

bold, italics, and underline

You can... but

Code: Select all

is more typing than *

So far I’ve started every training log post with CTRL+B before realizing I have to click the Bold button instead.

Since I’m not some kind of elite computer hacker, the bracket key is nowhere on my radar.

Ah, got it, okay. But then you screw things up if you want to use * for other things, which I do on a not rare basis.

They are already there, though the access key varies with the browser and operating system. In chrome on Windows, it is Alt (sometimes Alt+Shift). E.g Alt + b gives you bold.

It seems to be buggy, though.

Yeah, I'm always trying to use ctrl+b to bold stuff around here :(

On mac+chrome, ctrl+alt+b inserts the tags but also bumps you to the beginning of the prior word when doing so. ctrl+alt+i and u work. Nice. If this is something that can be changed, on mac it should be looking for cmd, not ctrl.

I'm using Opera on a mac, and ctrl+alt+b works, but it behaves stupidly. Why would I want to bold a blank space prior to the last word I typed?

ctrl+alt+b already has a meaning on a mac - go to the beginning of the current/prior word. ctrl+b goes left one. ctrl+a takes you to the beginning of the current line (including wrapped text), ctrl+n is down a line, ctrl+v to the bottom of the input, etc etc

I just checked on Chrome/Linux, and the shortcuts Alt+b,i,u etc. work. The problem with Chrome/Mac and Ctrl+Alt+b persists. There is not much I can do about it.
