Rain/snow boots? Walking the kid to and from school every day and it would be nice to have something grippy for moderate snow/ice, and waterproof so I don't have to think twice before walking through a puddle.

@Allentown I used to wear Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX boots for snow. GORE-TEX lining, grippy bottom, affordable, very lightweight, but they were kind of flimsy up top and uninsulated, and you needed thick woolen socks when it was seriously cold. They're more waterproof high-top sneakers than true boots, but I liked them for what they were.

I just switched to a pair of Meindls and these are tanks. Same GTX protection but insulated and super sturdy. Resolable too, they claim, thought I haven't checked if they're Goodyear welted or whatever. I don't live where it snows anymore so I haven't tested them in the cold, but splashing around in a muddy field was just fine FWIW. They're like 2lbs each though, though that's probably not the most tiring thing about trudging through snow.\

If you want something that isn't completely ugly though, the classical menswear solution is perhaps the Cheney Pennine, which is also available under the Herring brand as the Windemere. Absolutely gorgeous but also the most expensive while including exactly zero modern innovations: the waterproofing is dependent on leather's naturally waterproof properties and the Veldtschoen stitched sole, and the insulation is shearling, not the PrimaLoft whatever that modern outdoor boots have. But again, visually, just pure sex.

@omaniphil I like my Xtratufs. Very handy as quick slip-ons to go outside when it's wet (turn on car, take out trash, etc). Unfortunately, I use them for this much more than for actually fishing.

Honestly I've been using my basic Timberlands for this. I walk the kiddo about 7 blocks to school on a combination of side of the road (!?;*_#! sidewalk-less suburbs) and a park with paths and they're fine unless the snow is super high. With warm socks they are fine to zero or so, and we usually don't walk if it's that much colder than that. If it's really snowy I wear Keen snow boots.

Anyone have any recs for athletic fit hiking pants? I've tried various options from Prana and Kuhl. All were no-go. Levi's 541 and Gap Athletic-fit jeans fit me well. I need room in the hips and thighs, but don't want elephant legs at the opening.

Thanks for the rec. I should have mentioned that I need a pant that's fully synthetic. Those are 58% cotton.

I picked up a couple of polos (a pique and a jacquard) and an oxford cloth short sleeve from Charles Tyrwhitt (on sale, nbd), mentioned here before. Better fabric and construction quality vs the Bauer or BR stuff that I usually buy. XL is flattering on my modest guns and long enough for reasons. Recommend.
