I do not have one but have seen countless gym fails of people falling off of them.
I love gym fail videos

Probably the more expensive ones.

My wife had a friction type that the drive wheel rolls on, I thought you would strap in down to the device or something......she's since sold it.
I thought it was hokey at first, but she never fell off (as far as I know, or she had admitted to)....seemed secure.

They tend to be common in used markets though for the usual reasons, especially this time of year, maybe you'll be able to find one that way?Wilhelm wrote: ↑Fri Apr 02, 2021 9:31 am JFC!

Re: Bike roller stands?
Are you talking about a trainer that you clamp your wheel into, or the old school rollers you have to balance on like these: https://www.competitivecyclist.com/krei ... F0MTAwMDEw
I've used both quite a bit. The rollers are fun and keep the training interesting because you have to focus and work to balance. They don't offer much resistance, though. There is definitely a painful learning curve. The ones where your wheel clamps into just require you to sit there and pedal - you can watch movies or whatever while you exercise. Fluid resistance is the best, but magnetic is cheaper.

Re: Bike roller stands?
@lonestar777 i kind of didn't know one way or the other when i made the thread.
I've biked most of my life, but never used eiher of these things.
Honestly, my enthusiasm is waning now.
There are for sure things i'd rather get for $350+, and i don't want to buy someone else's problem used.
Perhaps someone will benefit from the guide Cellist posted though.

@Wilhelm Maybe you can find a cheap used magnetic resistance trainer on craigslist or FB marketplace? If you have a bike already and you want to get a workout indoors, it's definitely worthwhile to have one. If you can get a hold of an extra rear wheel you can buy trainer specific tires so you don't wear down your road tire.

By the time you get to spending a couple hundred bucks and having to switch out tires etc I'd probably just look for a stationary bike on Craigslist/FB unless you are super into it and really want to train on your actual fancy tri/road bike.

Re: Bike roller stands?
I bought one of these in January:
I hate it. I love biking, but I just realized I like the wind in my face, the moving scenery, etc. I just cannot stand riding place. I've been trying to get rid of it and have it listed on FB market place and Craigslist for 50% off the list price for the last month and haven't gotten a bite.

Re: Bike roller stands?
I bought one of the roller models mentioned earlier in the thread last fall. I've been downsizing my equipment over the past year to reduce some clutter and figured this could be a good space-saving alternative to indoor cardio equipment over the winter. I ride my bike 2-3 times/week when the weather is good and keep my bike indoors anyway (no garage), so this seemed like it could work.omaniphil wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 7:24 am I bought one of these in January: <snip>

I used it for about 3 weeks and hated it as well. With rollers you have to keep the speed up to maintain your balance, so it felt like you're always going uphill, and although trying not to fall off the thing was a bit of a challenge, it was also boring as hell.
I got rid of it (and eventually my other cardio machines) and just figured out a way of doing bodyweight/callisthenic cardio, which takes up no space and is a lot more interesting (I've used machines during the winter for over 25 years, so that's been a change for me).

Re: Bike roller stands?
I've had one of these for around 10 years: https://www.kurtkinetic.com/trainers-pr ... ne-smart-2
The large flywheel means it feels pretty road-like. Great piece of engineering and mine came with a lifetime guarantee. When I used to race, I would routinely do 3 hour LISS sessions in my garage when weather was too bad to train outside...

Rollers specifically or a trainer? I have used both. They are generally boring as ^*$% to ride on unless you are doing intervals or something. Newer models have online gamification features that can keep you occupied (on-line races etc.).
Rollers are generally more like being outside.
