Front squat and upper back rounding
I’ll update at some point today with a clip but basic question: Should/can the upper back go into flexion during the front squat? Maybe because I have scrawny front delts, or some flexibility issue somewhere, but when I try to squeeze my shoulders forward, to create the shelf, my upper back rounds. It’s not the load per se, since it’s already happening when I set up, and I’m going pretty light (185 for 5s; was doing 275 for 5s last week for back squat and it was light). So, is this a problem?

Re: Front squat and upper back rounding
Front squat rack requires good bit of flexibility along with favorable arm segment lengths.
You can keep working on the position, as there are videos out there from the WL community. You can also switch to crossed arms that circumvents the issue for the most part.

Ok, here's the clip. I'ts less about pitching over rounding (except on the ascent, at the very end) and more about my back not being entirely straight at any time:

Your upper back issues are minimal. Focus on keeping your elbows up and you should be fine.

Re: Front squat and upper back rounding
Thanks. Guess a big thing for me is lots of "getting used to it" with the front squat, which I haven't really even attempted in a few years. I'm accustomed to my back being somewhere between completely flat and slightly hyperextended for HBBS, for example.
Really, the hardest thing though has been how to cue myself to drive the bar up, since what I use for the BS ('pull down' on the bar with my hands to drive traps into it) won't work here.

Screw cross grip. Strap lyfe (if you're not gonna screw around trying to get a good front rack.).
Actually, I think it was a video from @mgil that made straps finally work for me, that cinch really helped.

Normal WLer front rack... meh...
Cross/bodybuilder grip... yawn...
Frankenstein... booooring...
Straps... not bad...
Flipping your SSB around and taking the handles off... ASCENDED.
HOW... that's amazing...
I thought my upper back was pretty shit at limit numbers but this... just wow...

Nothing against the OP (I already said his form was fine for just starting out)
That meme-account post is too priceless. I award 5 out of 5 steel balls.
Its too good to put in a shit post thread / forum / misc.
I searched 'front squat' thread ... and this came up....appropriate because "rounding"....yes, this goes here.

Seems to me OP's hip angle is actually very good.
