Re: Why Antique York Racks Are Stupid
If the customer wants to, of course. Until then It's fine not to. Grinding the ends will look worse if you don't paint em, or polish the whole thing, but then again the welds are good and the real issue is the lack of any sort of coating for that price. Shit'll arrive brown at your door.
If you really want to bitch about stuff:
That Is unacceptable for that price. The weld sticks out at the side, there are spots where the black coating has been ground off (looks shitty and will rust instantly), and the C-channel at the top hasn't been deburred. Its still sharp. The holes are sharp too.
This is "precision welding", the start on the left is borderline flat, the small one on the right is definitely off centre and barely catches the upper C-channel. It's already rusting, as is the pull-up bar. It has lasered logos. They could have also cleaned the spatters on both pictures. $1200 my ass, this is minimum effort fabrication. Low quality finish. Typical Starting Strength.

Re: Why Antique York Racks Are Stupid
I was boggled when I saw the price of that piece of garbage that looks like someone's uncle with a welder put together out of Home Depot purchasers, especially compared TO OTHER MUCH SUPERIOR PRODUCTS MADE BY THE SAME COMPANY. It's gotta be a troll job. That or people really believe in Rip's cult of personality.mgil wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 5:56 pm If it isn’t already immediately clear from this thread, $1200, plus shipping and no bench (and I think @KOTJ has mentioned TSS padding not being great on Alan Thrall’s bench at Untamed) included, this is a shit deal. Rogue, Legend, EliteFTS, whoever is cheaper and made in the USA. Fuck, even TSS sells a six post rack with built in storage for $200 less than that York clone. Rip and Reynolds should be embarrassed.

I double on all you've said, and even more: for that price I risk saying you could get a high grade naval aluminium 100% TIG welded. It would look really patrician.
That weld job looks like it was performed by an intern. Oh, wait...

Imagine the shaking, murphyreedus wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 6:07 pm They could have at least given it a cool pullup bar . . .
we see/saw what happens when rack 400#, or do dips with two bars.
Then grab it at very top, load it, and add repeated rhythmic front to back motion....
Good luck with your Tacoma Narrows Rack.

...sheeeet, just clicked on their site.
They offer plenty of other racks/stands at about 60% of the price....with paint and J-hooks.
I wonder who has bought these (SS rack for TSS) ?
ErikShaknado? Joej? DaveKinkman?

Re: Why Antique York Racks Are Stupid
To be fair, my giant 3x3 rack shakes enough when I'm doing dips on one side that the 45s on the opposite side will shake themselves off of the plate storage if i don't throw a speed collar on it before I start.
But yeah, did Brown get tired of making racks or something? I can't imagine this will have much demand, especially at the price point, but I wouldn't have picked TSS as my first choice to make it.

Re: Why Antique York Racks Are Stupid
When I started lifting, the gym at work had a C-channel power rack, almost identical to the StSt design. The only difference was in lieu of one bolt, there were two, on a common plate (high / low rack positions?). I didn't notice any problems with light weights, but it was definitely wobbly AF at 400+lbs. Re-racking 400+lbs always made me question whether the rack would fall over (despite being bolted to the floor). We later upgraded to a big-ass Hammer Strength power rack, which is a great commercial rack.

Re: Why Antique York Racks Are Stupid
Yeah, but they are TSS - Texas SS, as in Texas Starting Strength or like, in, maybe The SS? I don't know, these acronyms puzzle me.
Or maybe they were the only ones that agreed?

Re: Why Antique York Racks Are Stupid
Since SS equipment is an LLC or similar owned by Reynolds, I'd hazard a guess as to them being the ones to provide the highest profit return per unit sold. Johnny Brown has other shit to build, and probably doesn't need the business, especially since the cost of getting one direct from him (i.e. no royalties to some clown) was about the same. TSS probably has a fabrication shop more suited to this kind of business and cheaper labor.
Again, there are two better and cheaper power racks available from TSS that can have options added and are expandable. The concept that someone is going to pay more for less due to brand association and some sense of heritage is silly. Hell, TSS calling them "Rip Racks" is an insult to the York legacy. Even then, York wasn't putting a ton of effort into the engineering of these things.
