On your heavy dips, do you limit reps to triples?

I just went to 5 sets of 4 with 70lbs, and i'm bumping up to 80lbs but probably starting with doubles there.
I'm thinking a doubles to triples adding one rep to one set per session would be good at this point.

I get a little soreness in the trap collarbone area on one side by the time i finish five sets now.

Besides reps, how many sets do you do, and how often?

Just want to see what you find effective.

Thanks.
I've been doing dips just 1 slot per week, alternating between volume (4x5) and intensity work (did 1x5 until I couldn't, then have done mainly triples or doubles + backoffs). Bench and press programming has varied a bit in that timeframe. I usually do better after press vs. after bench. Which seems to intuit. Today I did an extra rep or two because I was mad about not managing at least one at 190, so I did a backoff of a backoff. 5-6 total very hard reps on intensity sessions has seemed to work pretty well to this point.

I think then since i'm doing two times a week, i may go down to doubles X3 progressed up to 3X3 just main weight (bw warmup)
One session is after heavy bench, and i actually skipped ahead today to all 4s so i wouldn't have 5 sets of 4s this Saturday after heavy bench.

If nothing else, i can use the lower volume to monitor this sore area, and have it not happen.
Same spot i got it in when i was doing really high volume bw dips end of 2019.

Thanks, and keep on chooglin'

If you palpate the area (fancy word for "jam your fingers into"), is there tenderness? If so, is it superior or inferior to the clavicle?

Glad you asked, i didn't want to spam your log.

It's actually right on top of the collar bone at the very end.
Seems like where connective tissue of some sort meets the bone.
Maybe the very end of the trap.
Seems like a lot of things come together in that area.

Same exact thing i had before when i did just a bit too much.

I kind of knew it tonight too, but i just had to get that last set.

Should have just called at 4.

Or whatever bone it is that meets the shoulder "bone"/top of the arm bone
All the way out, but i think the trap anchors part of itself there.

Try aiming your elbows at the wall behind you and limiting their "flare" next time. That usually helps when my shoulders get cranky.

2/3/2021:
Bench (short pause): 275x1, 285x1, 290x1, 275x2*
Power clean & jerks: Up to 175x1 again**

*Had to switch bars right before the last set because my new OPB arrived. Which gave me the juice to power through a paused double @ 275. Nice
**I am pretty well smashed up from a lot of snow/slush/ice clearance work. I didn't do much total work here, and it was slightly worse than last time.

2/5/2021:
Deadlift: 505x3 (PR! video. hook grip) 475x3 (straps)
Bench press: 245x5
2-Board press: 245x5x4
Squat: 315x5x2
Chin-ups: 125x1, 145x1 (PR! no video. honestly didn't think I'd get it), 125x3

Bodyweight 159.8. Gotta get on that. But it does mean I did a triple with pi*bodyweight, so maybe that's something?

2/24/2021:

Clean and jerk: up to 190x1 (180, 185, and 190 were all PR's. Just getting the hang of these. Notice I didn't say "good at")
Split snatch: up to 140x1 (PR. Also not good at these)

Nice. PRs are good, especially multiple ones in a session.
