notsoconfident's Training Log

#1

Post by notsoconfident » Sat Sep 14, 2019 5:40 am

Hi! I'm a 24 years old guy and I'll log my novice progression. Here's some background about my past training.

Age: 24
Height: 174cm
Weight: 80kg

I'll log my first workout on 16/09/2019 and I'll be able to train until 20/12/2019, so I should get about ~40 training sessions.

I'll start with the ALP program and switch to something else as soon as it feels grindy.

I'll use the same notation used on https://weightxreps.net/ so I can just copypaste my logs over there and get charts and statistics (which you can find here: https://weightxreps.net/journal/notsoconfident):
# Exercise
Weight x Reps x Sets
--

Monday 16, Sep 2019

# Front Squat
20kg x 5 x 2
25kg x 5
30kg x 5
35kg x 5
40kg x 3
30kg x 3 x 5

# Overhead Press
20kg x 5 x 3

# Snatch Grip Deadlift
30kg x 5
35kg x 5
40kg x 5 x 3

Squats all felt like a warm-up except for the 40kg, so I picked 30kg (~75%) as my initial weight. Rack position wasn't uncomfortable but I can't get my pinkies around the bar and they are just floating around. I used short rests as the working sets were light.

I always stalled at about ~30kg OHP so I thought it was best to start with the empty barbell.

On SGDL I tried to got as wide as possible (pinkies touching the beginning of the sleeves) for 30kg and 35kg and I could do it but it felt a bit weird so I settled for ring finger on the outermost mark (which is way wider than how I deadlifted before). I tried to kind of apply the same setup rules as per SS (barbell over middle of foot, grab bar, touch the bar with the shins, straighten the back) and it felt a little weird, I think I need more practice, so I just stopped there and did my working sets.

Couple of good tips here about grip width and feet.
I definitely point my toes out more for snatch grip than my usual conventional.

My grip just happens to be index fingers on the rings, which i chose kind of arbitrarily, but ends up fitting the suggested models for finding width.
I do use straps for these.
I'm doing the vanilla Montana Method 2 week template, and Hanley's percentages for these are the same as Alan mentions in the video, but with a little different rep/set scheme.

#Front Squat
20kg x 5 x 2
25kg x 5
30kg x 3
34kg x 3 x 5

#Overhead Press
20kg x 5 x 2
23kg x 5 x 3

#Snatch Grip Deadlift
40kg x 5 x 2
50kg x 5 x 3

Just realized I messed up my plates math and that this session and last session I didn't increase by 2.5kg but by 5kg. I don't have 1.25kg plates available, so I'll have to alternate +3kg increases and +2kg increases or just stick with +2kg/+3kg.

#Front Squat
20kg x 5
25kg x 5
30kg x 3
38kg x 3 x 5

#Overhead Press
20kg x 5 x 2
25kg x 5 x 3

#Snatch Grip Deadlift
40kg x 5
45kg x 5
50kg x 3
55kg x 5 x 3

Next Friday or next Monday I'll try to record some sets to get a form check (...if the gym isn't too crowded!).
Squats and DLs went fine, during presses I feel like my left shoulder is "weaker" and in a lower position than my right shoulder when lowering the barbell.

30kg x 5
35kg x 3
40kg x 3 x 5

#Overhead Press

23kg x 5
26kg x 5 x 3

#Snatch Grip Deadlift
40kg x 5
50kg x 5
58kg x 5 x 3

I've recorded my last set of front squats and my last set of snatch grip deadlifts (probably from the worst possible angle ever...) and I'll upload them to get a form check.

Last session's OHP felt grindy, so I decided to start alternating it with Bench Press (2x5, 5+ as in Greyskull LP) rather than stalling and resetting.

I was sure last session was 75kg. I finished really earlier than usual so I did some benching, thinking of slowly integrating the BBM "press fix".
