Pressing Matters - Peez' Log

#1

Post by peez » Tue Oct 03, 2017 7:35 am

Hi Everyone,

as so many of you I moved over here from, ahem, a different forum.

Short background - I started lifting about three and a half year ago to rehab my knee after a meniscus surgery, but then lifting kinda took on a life of its own. My main sport remains Judo though - I coach at our local club. Both my kids (13, 10) train there as well. My main goal is to be strong enough for parenting, Judo, skiing, and to be useful regardless of whatever life throws at me. Lifting has been tremendously helpful in achieving that goal.

Currently, I'm 45 years old, 5'9"-ish and 190lbs. I lift twice a week in my garage - the pressing movements are on a 5-3-1 variant, and I'm slowly recovering from an adductor thing, just getting back into squatting and DL. Judo is twice a week, 1.5-2.5 hours. My favorite drinks are Franziskaner Weizen (German wheat beer) & Rheingau Riesling.

Lifetime PRs - singles (from memory) - DL 455, Squat 405, Bench 265, Press 225.

Next workout ("B") is tonight or tomorrow. Plan is for benching 230x5x3 and DL 395 or 405 for a few. For the "A" workout, Squat is currently at 320x5x3, press at 180x5x3.

Hi Chromoly and Shane,

of course I had to come over after the kind message from both of you.

Yes, still biking. That was yesterday morning on my commute.

Steel is real!

So was this - first time I've seen a live beaver around here

. I had seen wood chips and their dams before.

BTW this editor seems to arbitrarily rotate images to landscape, and sometimes even upside down. Oh well.

Thank you! If you take me for a German, you are right, but I live in NJ, USA, about halfway between NYC and Philly. Like your logo/avatar BTW!

Likewise! Looks like I am in good company all around. Maybe we can get Bingles to switch also.

Pretty pics, Peez. Is that one of our fair state's rails to trails?

It's the towpath on the Delaware/Raritan canal (this pic is next to Carnegie Lake in Princeton)... makes for a pleasant commute.

Time to catch up here.

Next workout was Wednesday a week ago. Had to skip lunch at work - no time - and decided to work out that night although I felt lightheaded and wobbly on my legs. You know, sometimes a good workout fixes that. Only this time, it didn't. Benched up to 235x4,3 felt like shit, and called it a day.

Then life & work got in the way and I didn't lift until yesterday. With my Judo tournament coming up on Saturday I decided to go into maintenance mode so I don't detrain fully, and resume next week. Oh I did help my friend unpack a 957lb shipment of kettlebells and carry them to our new gym in the basement. Farmer's walk with 250lb are kinda fun. Right. So last night all I did was pressing 185x5x2 and squatting up to 315x5x2.

Hope to be back on a regular schedule soon.

That is worse than regular lifting.

So, took an extra week off after that Judo-tournament. Felt beat up and way too much work.

Started lifting again last week, with a bit of a reset & obligatory DOMS

Tuesday:
Press 45x10, 135x5, 175x5x3 Hard. RPE > 9
Squat 45x5, 135x5, 225x3, 275x5x3 ATG (i.e. below parallel, I haven't been able to do true ATG since ACL surgery and limited ROM in my eft knee at age 12). Felt good & doable. (squats are _never_ easy)

Friday:
Bench 45x10, 135x5, 185x3, 215x5x3 RPE 10
DL 135x5, 135x5, 225x3, 315x1, 365x5. Unremarkable.

So I hope this gets me back on track ... eventually.

Today, I tried the fancy new company gym for the first time. Felt weird, but this might allow me to spread my workouts over the week. That Eleiko PL bar is stiff as a board, I am used to the whip of my Rogue 2.0 bar at home. No whip sure makes pressing harder.

Just did a quick 15 minutes after lunch - Press 45x10, 135x5, 180x3x3. Tomorrow is leg day.

Maybe a quick workout routine after lunch will get me out of the postprandial funk. Sure woke me up today - light lunch, some coffee - then off to lift.

Yeah, lately I seem to need a few weeks breaks now and then to get my lifting mojo back. Which is fine, keeps me (somewhat) sane.

'Nother quick post-lunch workout - in and out in 29 minutes. Will be slower as weights go up.

Squat 45x10, 145x5, 235x3, 285x5x3 (now I'm using 2.5 kg (each) locks so my plate math has to be adjusted)
Volume Bench 45x10, 135x5, 185x10x3 barely made this

Just finished a quick workout ... < 30 minutes total.

DL 45x5, 135x5, 225x3, 315x1, 375x5 singles - used a DL Jack for the first time - now I'm spoiled.

Press 45x10, 135x5, 165x6x3 (had hoped for more ...)

Overall I've been fighting a cold for the last week or two which isn't helping my lifts. Just gotta push through it.

Nice press there.

I'm going for DL 355 for 6 tomorrow. Still LP.

How do you grip DLs?

A little wedge DL bar jack is near the top of my gear budget for 2018.
