Deri's log

#1

Post by DeriHughes » Sat Sep 23, 2017 11:06 pm

Can't believe I don't log for a few weeks and come back to find everyone has moved on to a different party...

37, ex-rugby player now competitive raw powerlifter. Four kids under five and I work c60 hours a week so training time is limited, and sleep is a luxury.

Best lifts:
Squat - 272.5kg (comp)
Bench - 180kg (gym), 165kg (comp)
Deadlift - 257.5kg (comp)

Self-coached, which means progress is slow and sporadic

Actually not training much at the moment as we get used to life with newborn twins - three weeks old as I write this. They are awesome to hang out with, and the strength will come back fast enough.

Deri.

Cheers guys. Good to be here. There isn't much thought provoking discussion elsewhere these days.

I look forward to inconsistent training updates, lots of lurking, and the occasional misjudged intervention in a thread or two.

Identical boys. So I now have a girl who will be 5 in November, a boy who is 2.5, and 3 week old twin boys. And a minibus.

It's going surprisingly well so far. I can pretty much change nappies in my sleep in pitch black now, so waking up isn't strictly necessary.

Did some exercise with a barbell this morning. Basically trolling my own log.

High bar squats, no belt, 3 min clock, 8s - 20, 60, 100, 140, 140, 140

Close grip bench, no belt, no wraps, 3 min clock, 8s - 60, 80, 90, 90, 90

Snatch grip deads, Oly shoes, figure 8 straps, no belt, 8s - 60, 100, 120 - hit the wall

Work capacity is fucked. Averaging c5 hours of broken sleep a night at the moment so not surprising. And bodyweight is down c3kg.

Not in a position to start training properly yet.

Yeh, it's pretty rough, although so much easier than with our first. Training will be shit for a while but it will come back and isn't a big deal at all in the bigger picture.

My log is the 10th least-logged log in the logging section. At least I'm slightly ahead of Hanley and KOTJ.

My weekly fuck-around exercise session. Tiredness is starting to bite hard now, the boys are 5 weeks in and work is ramping back up.

Beltless squat, favhes - 60, 100, 140, 160, 160, 160 - focusing on very clean form whilst I'm keeping the weights light

Close-grip bench, favhes - 60, 80, 100, 110, 110, 110

All on 3-min clock, @ 5-6 rpe, which is about all the fatigue I can cope with at the moment

Planning to Press & Pull on Sunday. Watch this space.

Wondered what that glinting from the West was

Sunday, weak ass pressing & pulling

Press - 80 x 3 x 4 @ 5-5.5, 80 x 7 @ 9 - 2.5 min clock, belt, Oly shoes

Deadlift, beltless, Oly shoes - 140 x 5 x 4 @ 5-6.5 - first set hooked, others with straps. Lower back cranky. Still embarrassingly light though. Guess that's what happens when you don't ever actually train.

Weekly session. Baseline fatigue from stress / sleep loss has stabilised a bit. Did spend yesterday taking four kids round Thomas the Tank Engine land and then driving for 3 hours.

Comp squat - 60x5, 100x5, 140x3, 160x3, 180x3x3 @ 5-6.5 - back was a bit cranky so put a belt on for the top sets. Closing in on a 400 squat...

CG BL Bench - 120 x 3 x 5 @ too light

Deadlift, Oly shoes, beltless - 160 x 3 x 3 - these felt much easier than 140x5 last week so deadlifts seem to be bouncing back a bit. Still weak as f**k though.

Kind of glad I'm not hosting manveer next weekend - the plate changing to get back down to my lifts from his work sets would be painful

Ha! I am doing some deload stuff this week, shouldn't be too heavy. Rooting for your 405 squat.

Weekly session done. My experiment with low volume, low intensity, low frequency training continues. Early days, but results appear to be poor to mediocre. Ground breaking insight that.

Squat - no belt, 6s - 60, 60, 100, 140, 160 x 6 x 3 @ 6, 6, 6

CG Bench - no belt, 6s - 60, 90, 100, 110 x 6 x 3 @ 6, 7, 8.5 - triceps fatigued quickly

Banded chins @ 130kg, 2 min clock - 3, 2, 2, 1, 1

Agreed. I have a window to train a bit more over the next two weeks as well.

How was last night?!
