Working on a case of swoleosis

#1

Post by torkins » Mon May 14, 2018 12:13 pm

I'm Patrick, a 37 year old father of two from Atlanta. 5'7", currently about 168lbs.
Life StoryShow
I was a sedentary computer nerd from the age of 12 until at 31 when my first child (daughter) was a baby. To take breaks during paternity leave, I started going outside to run (which I didn't know how to nor have any ability to do). I progressed from being able to run about 50 feet without stopping to being able to run about 8 miles at a 8.5 min/mi pace. This was my first experience with real training, or really physical activity of any kind. I motivated myself by rewarding calories burned with bags of tortilla chips and salsa eaten (burn 1000 calories, eat an entire bag of tortilla chips and salsa in one sitting). At this point my weight had dropped down to about 133lbs at the lowest.

After a couple of years my second child was born, which completely exploded my ability to train (which I was getting tired of anyway). From mid-2014 till mid-2016 I was back to literally never exercising at all. In 2016 I bought a new house from a couple who was moving to London, and as part of the deal they left behind a shitty but functional power rack and unlabelled bar. After a while of it staring at me judgmentally, a friend of mine told me about StrongLifts. I started doing it and have been strength training ever since. Eventually I transitioned to SS, burned out on "advanced novice" tapering and lots of resets, gained too much body fat (from peak to trough I gained 40 lbs from 140->180), etc. I did get decently strong though and now strength training is part of my life. My (now 6) year old daughter has been to Atlanta Barbell with me and seen my wife lift enough that she has an interest and periodically deadlifts, squats, and presses for fun.
Just started Hanley's "Montana Method" 2 wk program today as my previous program (BBM hypertrophy) ended and I have exact 2 weeks until I leave for Europe for 11 days. After I return, I'll be training w/ Alex Kennedy to "compete" in the USSF Fall meet at Atlanta Barbell.

PRs (all gym):
Squat: 340
Deadlift: 393
Bench: 255
Press: 152

Thanks! People probably wait to log here until they bench more than you, I assume they got the same email I did.

Day 2 of the Montana Method
OHP 138x1 @ 9
116x7 min density block.. 5,5,4,4,4,3,3=28 reps, 1 min rest between sets

edit: For lunch did the prescribed "HIIT".. recovering from a bout of shin splits over the past few weeks. Ran minute on/minute off intervals at 6:45 min/mi for 6ish minutes and couple miles of jogging. Think I pushed the intervals a bit harder than I should have, next time will pull it back to 7:20 min/mi

After being on a deep cut for 6 weeks, celebrating the end of it today with some ice cream. After 1 spoonful almost crapped myself with joy and tried to ram it into my face as fast as possible.

Montana Method Wk1D3

Squat
warmups, 311x1 @ 8
bit of a form fuckup on the top single.. I can definitely tell that I'm still a bit out of practice at high intensity squats after running the BBM Hypertrophy template. The last half of that template brings heavy single practice in and I got better in that phase but still getting it back. Paradoxically I feel like my overall squat form actually got notably better from the extra volume.. just my proprioception under the real heavy weight is just.. bad. Still unfamiliar, but like I said, getting better.
Bench
warmups, 233x1 @ 8
Felt pretty clean
CGB
168x3s8r
DL
353x1@8
295x5s4r, 2 min interset rest

Got some extra rest time between last couple DL warmups.. when getting my belt out I accidentally knocked the buckle against a nut.. had to sit down a bit after that. At least its cheaper than a vasectomy.

Because you ran TM and were convinced that more than 5 sets of bench a week constituted overtraining?

Nah, ran several different TM and HLM setups, with tons of bench volume, but i think it wasn't working because there was no structure in terms of accumulation/peaking/deload so i stalled hard, reset and stalled hard again, rinse and repeat. I did one cycle of Nuckols' 4 week intermediate bench program and instantly PR'd. The volume was just a tad bit higher than what i did throughout the last year, the intensity a lot lower tho, so i'm bumping up volume.

Running & Chins today

minute on/minute off intervals for 10min again.. despite pledging to pin it back last time I felt pretty great when I got started (probably b/c listening to A Giant Dog). Avg speed was 6:20 min/mi. ~2 mile of light jog or walking as I felt my ITB start to get angry when I sprinted a bit for fun to wrap up my intervals.

10 min chin density block.. this time started with 6s with a minute rest and hit a new PR of 50, sets were: 6,6,6,6,6,5,5,4,3,3

Feeling great today, so far this week no soreness at all except just a bit of calf from Tuesday's run, I suppose I was already adapted to the volume from the BBM Hypertrophy template.

Running is a wasting disease

Montana Method Wk1D5
Squats
273x3s3r
243x2s3r
Rx was squats 5s3r @ 273(80%).. did 3 sets this way with 3 min rest but my left quad was getting progressively angrier, so dropped to 243 to finish out the last two sets. Pretty sure I overdid it running yesterday, at least with regard to having a heavy-ish squat set the next day. Think next time I'll put the run on the day after strength day and take a break between P and S.

Bench
4 sets of (3xTNG, 1x1ct @ 206#). 2min rests between, Felt a bit easy

Gotta eat, SGDLs later today

SGDLs can make your nuts swole

continued..
SGDLs aka Nutsmashers
213x4s5r...
My first time doing SGDLs.. Hanley wasn't kidding about them crushing your junk. You can see in my 2nd and 3rd rep I'm actually afraid to lock out b/c of junk endangerment. Luckily these were light enough I could just hang out at 95% locked out and keep my manhood intact. I wonder if they were too light, but I trust in the magic of Montana. Specifically, I've been seduced by easy.

Last night was game board + pizza night, Lords of Waterdeep. Crummy sleep, blew my fat/carb macros a bit on delicious pizza.

10 min density block of chins, 6,6,6,6,6,6,5,5,4 = 50 1 min rests between, matching the PR from last time.. one more set of 6 before I had to drop to 5s but the fatigue caught up and I couldn't get the last 1 to break 50. Maybe next time I'll try something a little different like starting with 4s every 30s.

Bit of shin soreness from this week's running so did the old man routine, 10 min of elliptical med resistance "sprints" if you can call them that, 10 min 10% incline walk, 10 min of elliptical sprints, 10 min 10% incline walk while watching another great ep of ST:DS9.

Montana Method W2D1

Squats(e1rm 345)
3s4r @ 258
3s3r @ 258 (Rx was 4s but knees getting angry on the last couple sets so nixed set 7)
2 min rests

Bench(e1rm 257)
3s4r @ 193
4s3r @ 193
2min rests
Never exceeded an RPE 7, hope this isn't too easy, NEED GAINZ

7 min chin density block
4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,3,3=46!
Tried my proposed strategy from last time, sets of 4 with 30s rest. This worked insanely well, crushing my previous 7 min record of 34 and only 4 less than my 10 min record of 50!

BW 166.6, scale BF 16.6% (been recording BW all along separately but will start putting here so can keep it all together)

Today my 6 year old held a 'family award ceremony' in which she awarded me the "Exercise Star" award because I'm exercising all the time. I felt very conflicted about this honor.

Also I read an early part of Kyle's log where his six year old asked him how babies get into mommies. My daughter pretty much understands sperm, eggs, penises, and vaginas, but not the arrangement that brings them together. Recently she was thinking deeply about this and suddenly asked us in a very conspiratorial voice "So.. do you put your butts together?"

Montana Method W2D2
OHP
Rx is 10 min density block @ 116
Last time I did 28 in 7 min. This time I decided to try similar approach as to chins, and do triples with 30s wait times. Seemed to work a bit better than the 1min rests:
OHP @ 116 for 10 min, 30s rest, 13 sets of 3, then 1x2, 1x1 = 42. If you linearly project the 28 in 7 from last week, you get to 40, so this beats that. Considering that linearly continuing for another 3 minutes is hard to do, that really beats it. So I think 30s is the rest time for me for density blocks, at least upper body ones.

HIIT
stupid shins are sensitive and I really don't want to have shin splits for London (my place is very close to the British Museum and Buckingham Palace and I plan on doing some hopefully pretty scenic runs there), so I restricted myself to my elliptical... WHAT FUCKING ASSHOLE INVENTED THE ELLIPTICAL?
30s elliptical sprints w/ 30s rest for 7 min.

Montana Method W2D3
Shitshow Warning!
Squat
311x1 felt like an 8 but...
320x0! Lost tension in the hole, which is the same thing that happened doing 320 2 weeks ago.
DiagnosisShow
Image
Bench
233x1 @ 8
243x1 @ 9.5... could definitely have done more weight, a second rep questionable though

I'll fess up.. being very tired and pissed after the shitshow of the Squat, I had a very rare (for me) motivation fail staring in the face of doing a top single on DL, and lots of volume. So I wussed out and negotiated myself down to the following random stupidity:

3s5rx145 front squats (I virtually never do these so pretty light), 1min rests
4s10rx155 BB calf raises (???) this sort of silliness is what happens when I go off program. My rationale was the unfounded idea that maybe strengthening with these would help prevent the fatigue/pain I get in my upper ankle/lower shin from running too much.
5s12r GHRs 30s rests

Let's realtalk... I have gone off Rx at all maybe 6 times in 1.5 years of working out of 4-5 days a week. I think the impending vacation and my plans to start w/ my coach when I come back on a new program kind of makes this whole two weeks fuckoff time. >_> ok thats enough excuses for now.

I'm in merry ole England now, and there's a surprisingly solid gym a 10 min walk away, Performance Training Ground. No specific plan other than to maintain S&C during my trip so I did top singles @ RPE and backoff sets at about 70%ish 1rm weights for bench, squat, deadlift. Felt quite strong in all of the singles, probably because of so many days without lifting (4). One major downside? Doing kg plate math for the first time.. took me forever.

Squat
319x1 @ 8
238x3s5r

Bench
237x1@8
183x5s5r

Deadlift
363x1@8
274x4s5r

Prowler sprints w a 45 plate on
